Bowel Cancer Screening - is it EXACTLY every 2 years?

I did my first screening FIT test 2 years ago and distinctly recall getting the all clear letter on 1/7/23, exactly one week after sending off the sample, so presumably I will receive my next test any day now?

Reason I ask is, I get occasional small amounts of bright red blood when wiping (have done for years) which I'm pretty sure is from a pile(s)/a small cut/wiping too hard but, as its happened a bit more recently, want to get properly checked out. I know the first thing the GP will do is a FIT test, so as I'm due one anyway, wanted to get that out of the way, given I'll probably need to wait a couple of weeks for an appointment.

So my question is, are the tests sent out exactly every two years, or is it a bit random? Will I get a letter first like the first time, followed by the test a couple of weeks later or do they just send the test kits once you're in the programme?

Obviously, if it doesn't turn up soon, I will make an appointment but would be grateful to know the experience of others.

Thanks!

I would just go to the GP to be honest, if you are having symptoms. The threshold levels are much higher for the National screening program test (120ug) than the threshold if you have symptoms (10ug) so it will be treated differently. The levels are higher on the national screening program because they have to determine a cut off on cost of follow up but the national screening test assumes no symptoms. For peace of mind I’d go and get it checked out. I am on routine colonoscopies now (every 3 years) even though I am still years off the national screening program and that’s with the reduction in age.

Thanks, will do. Didn't realise that. Why do you have 3 yearly colonoscopies out of interest?

So the invitation letter saying my kit is on the way has arrived so I might as well wait until I get the result then see the GP regardless. As I said, I'm pretty sure the blood is external - a few occasional fresh looking specks that appear separately on the paper. Has been happening for many years, roughly every 6 months, sometimes 2 or 3 times within a few days, then disappears again till the next time. However, I will get it checked out!

I'd contact the GP without waiting, I had my screening one recently and it was a while after getting the letter to getting the kit then another couple of weeks for results. You could always mention that you are due screening when you fill in an e consult.
