What’s this on my hands?

For years now I’ve had some sort of fungal (maybe?? Pure self diagnosis there) thing appear on my hands when we it gets hot. It’s like bubbles under the skin. And then it sort of eats away at the top layer of skin.

It’s only on the palms of my hands and sometimes around the tops of my fingers and thumb, on the front side of my hand.

I’ve ben told to use Canestan on it but that doesn’t seem to do much and of course is washed off every time I was my hands so it’s not very practical except at night.

But I still don’t know what it is!

Any suggestions?

Pomphylox eczema from the description

RomeoMcFlourish · 03/07/2025 09:24

Sounds like pompholyx, also called dyshidrotic eczema - it’s a skin condition where you get itchy blisters on your hands and feet.

I get it, there are different remedies you can try, although once I’ve broken out in it it’s often a case of keeping it comfortable rather than being able to get rid.

Yes agree with @Seawolves pompholyx. I had this for years, the blisters were so itchy, my skin so sore, nothing any gp gave me worked until I saw an 70 odd year old locum doctor who recognised it immediately and treated it. It’s never come back. Pregnancy seemed to see it off for good strangely enough but I wouldn’t recommend that as a treatment 😂 Good luck xx

Ah yes wretched pompholyx! I developed it first about 15 yrs ago and am currently suffering through the worst bout of it since I first had it. My hands look embarrassingly awful. Luckily hands only at the moment. I find the ones on the feet sometimes get infected 🤢

My GP once said that outbreaks were stress related but I cannot think I have been more stressed than usual recently. A mild steroid cream can help a bit.

Thank you! How was it treated by your elderly locum? Don’t worry, pregnancy’s not an option for this post-menopausal woman 🤣🤣!

Thank you all! Knew MN would come through - no doctor or pharmacist has ever given it a name before!

I get that if I use antibacterial hand wash. If I use bar soap I'm fine.
