Retraining to sleep on my back

I reached an age where sleeping in my default ‘superman’ position results in morning face looking like scrunched-up paper (it’s all vanity, I know!) Anyone had success retraining themselves to sleep on their back? No matter how determined I am not to turn over, it just becomes too uncomfortable. Any tips / gadgets that proved useful? Am thinking body pillows, weighted blankets, god knows what else?

😅

You're old. Embrace your inner crone and be comfortable.

I sleep on my front too, I never thought of it as superman, more 'dead body lined in chalk'.

But I generally wake up on my back in the morning so I must turn over half way.

I don't think there is much you can do. I had surgery last year and had to lie on my side for a few months and only the anxiety of ripping my stitches kept me there. I woke up with sore hip bones every morning.

Yes, I was having problems with my shoulder which was exacerbated by sleeping on my side

I did then start to have neck ache as my head naturally fell to the side but a squishing of pillows to support my head in aline with my body helped

I used my s shaped pillow for a while but don't find the comfy long term

I've tried this over the years as with even the best camping mattress side sleepers tend to get sore hips and I camp a lot. But I always wake up on my side.

If I sleep on my back I usually snore and wake up with a sore throat...but if do I want to be comfortable in that position I put a pillow behind my knees. Otherwise I will also get backache (oh the fun of an ageing body). But pillow under knees does feel comfier and more relaxed to me.

Try a silk pillowcase first.

Shamelessly hanging around for a solution. Too late for my face but need to try it for the sake of my back

Second the silk pillowcase.

Thanks guys! I kinda don’t mind some other signs of ageing (crow feet are lovely!) but this sleeping habit meant I developed two vertical creases going up from the corners of my mouth, looking like fangs…yikes! I haven’t seen anyone else, even much older people have it. Tried silk pillowcases no difference, tried a normal pillow under knees - no difference. So trying to explore more advanced options, short of an entirely new bed/mattress which is obviously a total overkill…

I doubt it is your sleeping position that is giving you wrinkles.

AquaCat93 · 01/07/2025 18:03

I can't imagine anything more miserable than trying to sleep on my back 😆. Honestly I just feel like I'm lying there waiting to die.

How about a silk pillowcase or some kind of special front sleeper pillow?

As PPs said the only time I've ever managed it was after surgery where I physically couldn't get myself into the front position.

I slept semi supine propped on two pillows. Was looking into a v shaped number.

Then managed to manoeuvre back to my front. The relief, genuine relief, of being able to sleep on my front again was wonderful 😅 They were genuinely the worst nights sleep ever, only helped by vast amounts of cocodomal.

So short version...a chunky pillow and some very strong camomile tea to knock you out?

AquaCat93 · 01/07/2025 18:04

Oh face yoga could be worth a try - I have found it helpful for reducing fine lines.

Pinkrabitt · 01/07/2025 22:26

You could try scar tape. I've never tried it but apparently you can put it on the parts of your face that wrinkle in the night and it smoothes them out. Sounds more comfortable than sleeping in one position all night!

I trained myself to sleep on my back for vanity as a young teen (it worked so well that I always wake up laying on my back even if I deliberately moved to side because I have a tickly cough or feeling sick or whatever) I’ve never found a special pillow that I like either, I clasp my hands like a dead body too @AquaCat93I love it 🤷🏽‍♀️
