He seems to have caught a bug from dd who has been sick a couple of times since last night. He's had water only now but is still being sick. Is there anything I can do and do you think he needs to see a doctor?

Just a bit worried that he's been sick so much.

If he has a drink too soon after wretching then it will come straight back up again. Better to wait at least half an hour to let his tummy muscles settle down. Does he have a high temp?

JodieG1 · 24/05/2008 20:23

No temp. He wanted a drink so thought it would be best to let him have a sip. It was about 5-10 mins after being sick that he had a drink.

If he was my DS I'd give him some Calpol to help him sleep,if he'll keep it down Keep checking on him if he'll sleep, see how he goes tonight. There is a sickness and Diarrhoea bug going round.

You didnt say how old he is,if he's over a year, having an empty tum for 24 hrs wont hurt him,if he feels like sipping some water then let him.Otherwise rest his stomach overnight.

If he continues to be sick tomorrow, but will keep having a sip of water every so often and keeps it down,I wouldnt worry too much.

If he cant keep anything down at all, phone your out of hours doctors,or NHS Direct. There isnt much you can do if its a bug but try and ensure they'll keep a small amount water down.

Usually in 48 hrs, the worst is over.

My LO has had this bug on thursday, he's 14 months. Everything that hit his stomach came straight back up again, including water, for 18 hours - i was getting worried about his electrolytes but NHS direct said just to keep an eye out for signs of dehydration such as dry mouth / sunken fontanelle / dry nappies in 8-10 hours.

We had one horrific night where he just wanted to guzzle water but couldn't keep more than a teaspoon in his tummy, then the following morning we had 3 pure water nappies and since then he's not vomited. He's still not eating and is doing 3 watery nappies per day but having lots of bmilk so I'm not worried, and he's his usual cheeky self, just a bit whingier than normal.

Go to the docs if you're really worried but as long as no temp and you can give him a little water every half hour (* I was advised 30 mls max) he should be fine for 24 hours.

Sorry JodieG1,by the time I'd read everyone elses posts,I'd forgotten the age bit! Brain cells disappearing fast.....Hope your 16 month old is better tomorrow.

They can get away with vomitting lots over a long period and it takes a while to be dehydrated. I would try small sips 5-10ml every 5-10 mins and see what he/she keeps down. My dd had norovirus and was sick for 11 days and the first four were very very vomitty...
