dietician has recommended soy but I have discovered this product today and wondered if it was a no- no - dietician is unavilable to check with

Not if she's allergic/intolerant to dairy, no, as it's usually cows milk protein that causes a problem at this age rather than lactose.

You can use rice or oat milk with added calcium though. Not as nutritious as some alternatives, but ok to use at this age.

DD's dietician (she was milk intolerant) said it was fine from 1 year, and as a source of calcium it absolutely is, so I'm afraid that your dietician is wrong, but totally understand that you want to go with what she says.

CrushWithEyeliner · 24/05/2008 20:51

I don't know what you mean by that - my dietician has not said that rice or oat milk is not a source of calcium. She has just not stipulated that 17m old babies get all their calories from food and I totally agree with her and she has also advised against lactofree as it contains milk proteins my DD is lactose intolerant. Sorry but I don't see how she is wrong.

My DD is not a huge eater and would certainly not get enough nutrition if I stopped milk at this age.

You said that your dietician said that rice milk was a no-no. I (and other dieticians) am disagreeing with that. It also contains calories as well as calcium. I agree that some milk is necessary for all bar the most exceptional eaters at this age.

Why does she say no to rice milk?

Sorry I haven't been clear enough - it hs been an awful couple of weeks. DD has lost a lot of weight and had diorreah for weeks now.

Dietician doesn't say no to rice milk she says no to "lactofee" made with cow's milk as it still contains milk proteins. DD has been prescribed Soy but hated the taste so I was looking for alternatives.

Interesting riven about the milk filling up tummies. Are all your children Vegan from birth? What is a G tube?
DD is such a "milky" baby and just loves it, it settles her and satsifies her as food can't. She is also not a big eater at all and it is a struggle. I do think it is relative to the child and we all know our children best.

Dietician has said to mix the soy in her goats milk whilst eliminating all lactose and it is working - had a hard poo this morn thank the lord.

Oh Riven that must be so stressful for you. Did you put them on Soy milk from birth or BF? I have heard negative things about Soy and only plan to use it during the time she is so intolerant. I hope to ease back to Goats milk asap.

DD just holds (most) foods in her mouth for ages. It can take up to an hour to feed a tiny portion. It is v strange. Did you choose the vegan route because of hereditary intolerances?

I am just interested sorry if it seems nosey - nutrition fascinates me...

I've no idea why your dietician says no to lactofree if she's lactose rather than dairy intolerant - Me and ds's are all intolerant and we use lactofree with no bother -perhaps she's thinking it's like the one it replaced, lactolite which did have some lactose in it -lactofree has none. if on the other hand they are suspecting a daiery intolerance it would make sense - oh, and at 17 months milk isn't that important

CrushWithEyeliner · 25/05/2008 19:30

jamila I think I answered your first sentence about 3 posts ago it is the milk proteins in lactofree (it actually contains 0.05% lactose for hat it's worth so not great for lactose intolerance at all) she said is not good for DD. BUT she is drinking the Soy MIXED now so it's fine.

CWE is there a reason you say soya formula, and not soya milk? My DS (strongly allergic to milk & eggs) has been on soya milk since 2 (now nearly 4). Alpro soya (and others) have added calcium... so I saw it as a similar source of both calories and calcium. I don't think the taste is that different from normal milk.

Just a suggestion.

CrushWithEyeliner · 25/05/2008 20:29

riven that is v interesting. I am not surprised you encountered that kind of attitutude and conflicting advise from the healthcare professionals - I use the term loosely..

Catilla she has been prescribed first and foremost Soy formula purely because of the calories as she is quite tiny and more so now due to diorreah for a month!
