Is there an effective cough medicine for dry/tickly cough?

My dd (age 4) has had a cough on and off for a couple of weeks. It hasn't really bothered her and has been worse at night but not affected her sleep.

Last night, she was awake in the night and could not stop coughing, I thought she was going to be sick. We tried steam and propping her pillow up and also put some olbas oil in hot water in her room. It seemed to help after a while.

Is there a cough medicine that is effective as well?

I think that the things you've done are the best approach - I don't think cough medicines really work. You could try giving her sips of really really cold water (with ice in it) I find this helps with tickly throats. Hope she's better soon.

That's a good idea Seeker, thanks.

Honey was I think recently shown to be more effective than over the counter cough medicines. Spoonful works well with my DC.

does it matter what type of honey? I have a bit of ordinary set honey in the fridge.

No idea. I use whatever's around. Can't see why set wouldn't work

Are you positive it isn't an asthmatic cough?

Has she got hayfever as well?

rosealbie · 24/05/2008 16:59

I'm not positive it isn't an asthmatic cough but she has had a bit of a runny nose too. Could be hayfever I guess. No other symptoms though.

Is there any way of telling?

could be an allergy?

you could try with some piriton and see if it helps..... it has helped my dd....who has had a cough for weeks. she also has a steam thing in her room at night as she is asmatic...

chocolatespiders · 24/05/2008 17:15

if the cough persists fro weeks and is she wheezy at all. my dd gets wheezy walking up the stairs

rosealbie · 24/05/2008 17:16

No she isn't wheezy. She coughs a lot in the morning when she first gets up and then it usually wears off during the day. Today though, she has been coughing a lot again.

My dh just reminded me that ds had a cough for weeks when he was around 2. The docotr did prescribe him an inhaler at the time but the cough wore off and we didn't use it.

I will keep on eye on dd and take her to see the GP if it persists.

I think you can only really tell if an inhaler stops the coughing, but look here
