Shower water in nose and down throat Naegleria fowleri risk?

Petitewinter · 27/06/2025 13:45

I had a shower and a bit of warm water went up my nose and down my throat. So now I am worried about that nasty brain bug Naegleria fowleri.
I am in the UK.
Any advice? I am quite worried! Thank you.

Eh?

SoftandQuiet · 27/06/2025 13:47

I'm a 49 year old nurse in UK, never heard of it.

rubyslippers · 27/06/2025 13:47

Do you have massive health anxiety?
because this post suggests you do
water is treated in the UK - millions of people shower everyday and accidentally swallow water
I’m 50 and have never ever heard of the brain bug you’ve posted

dementedpixie · 27/06/2025 13:48

I had never heard of it and had to Google
Unless your shower was from a river or a lake then you are quite safe!
Why would you think your shower would contain this parasite?

Blanketenvy · 27/06/2025 13:48

Step away from Google. If you are health anxious the absolute worst thing you can do is Google.
You are totally fine.

marshmallowpuff · 27/06/2025 13:50

Very unlikely that treated household water in the U.K. is infected by naegleria! It likes swampy warm freshwater outside in countries like the US. It’s also v v v unlikely that a spray of water up nose and down throat from a shower would reach the pressure up into the nasal cavity that is required. I think you can rest okay OP.

Iamtarticus · 27/06/2025 13:51

Do you mean legionella?

Stichintime · 27/06/2025 13:51

Unless your area was on rare water warning alert, you're fine! One thing we do have in the UK is clean water.

crumpet · 27/06/2025 13:51

From. A quick google there might be around 10 infections a year in the US and in the last few years only a couple of instances in the uk. What makes you think your shower is particularly susceptible?

Petitewinter · 27/06/2025 13:53

Yes I do have heath anxiety and I am working on it. I'm surprised not many of you have heard of it. Thanks for helping though.

As far as I can see there are no documented cases of Naegleria fowleri infection ever having originated from UK tap water.

Even in the US where their standing water is much warmer than ours there are less than five cases a year and only a fraction of those are from tap water.

Andthatrightsoon · 27/06/2025 13:55

Bloody hell, OP, how do you live?

Bloody hell, OP, how do you live?

A member of the family recently died from a very rare brain infection so I guess it triggered me.

I’m very sorry for your loss OP

Nursemumma92 · 27/06/2025 21:20

Never heard of it! Sorry for your loss and that you are struggling but I think infections from water in the UK is very rare. My children both drink bath water like it's nectar and have been fine!

Kissedbyfire1 · 27/06/2025 21:27

I brush my teeth in the shower and I’m not dead yet.

CrotchetyQuaver · 27/06/2025 21:49

In the nicest possible way if you have to Google and come up with seriously obscure stuff like this that you MIGHT have subjected yourself to, then you need to carry on researching and get an idea of the numbers of cases in this country over a certain period and a decent evidence based idea of how likely it is you might have it. Find a few case studies if you can, that sort of thing, where they give you statistics/outcomes. Don't go off at half cock.
perhaps I should add, I just lost my husband to a very rare blood cancer, I did the research, there wasn't a lot because it's so unusual and frankly it was all terrible outcomes. He lasted 6 weeks from diagnosis. I'm a need to know kind of person, I think it did help knowing we could lose him but his way of coping was denial so he didn't want to know, I just had to keep it to myself. I'm not meaning to sound unsympathetic, so thought I'd add in about my DH.

you're usually only likely to get it from putting your head under water, swimming in natural hot water springs
