Does anyone have any experience of aneurysms?

I'm asking for my dsis really. Her fil works away a lot and is currently in New York. He is in hospital after collapsing earlier in the week. He has had bleeding in his brain and they have found a large aneurysm. Her dh and his brother and mum have all flown out there so dsis is on her own with the internet to search for things. I've told her not to but she said she wants to know more. The last time she spoke to her dh was last night and her fil was waiting to have an operation where they put a clip on the aneurysm. Does anyone have experience of this? Obviously all operations involving the brain are mega-serious but she couldn't ask her dh much.

same thing happened to me AbbyLou about 12 years ago when I was 29. I just suddenly one night had a terrific pain in my head and started vomitting. I was rushed to hospital and they operated the next day. they actually drilled a hole right in the center of my forehead and I have a scar that runs ight round my hairline. These days they tend to enter the area through the main artery in the groin - how amazing is that!

It is more common than you think. The good sign with your sisters FIL is that he is alive. Quite often at the time of the burst it kills outright No use really but each case is different and in a different place, so it will really be a case of operate, wait and see and hopefully he will have no after effects such as similar to a stroke or epilepsy that sort of thing. I was extremely fortunate and just suffer with poor (more forgetful) short term memory loss but it's not that bad and I can't remember what I forgotten

as I said, his chances are good as he is alive let me know how he gets on and i wish him all the best

Oh Furball, thanks so much for your positive words. How scary for you to go through something so terrifying at such a young age! I thought he was young at 56!
My dsis rang a few minutes ago and the news is good. He was in surgery for 7 hours but apparently it has been a complete success. Her dh says he looks a mess and it was horrible to see him when he was coming round. He said he was thrashing around and trying to pull all the wires etc out! But at least he is alive and maybe that shows a fighting spirit.
They will keep him in now for about 2/3 weeks to make sure he is stable before he will be allowed to travel back to Englad. His wife will stay with him and then travel back with him. I think my bil and his brother will stay another few days to see how their dad is when he wakes up properly.
I have told my sister about you, just to give her a positive outlook. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I used to work with someone who had this and was fine for years, though this sort of thing could re-occur. In her case, after some 5-6 years she felt some numbness/tingling in her fingers, that was her alarm call. I am sure she had the op again later on, lost contact since then, but last I have heard was that she was moving house and was fine.

My mum had one 19 years ago - very bad headache, collapsed. She had an opertion to clip the bleed and made a full recovery. Her bleed was a small one and it took her 6 months to make a full recovery.

A scary time for you all but I hope he pulls through
