If your baby was diagnosed with 'failure to thrive' how did they get on health-wise in the end?

Sorry, thread title is a bit crap. What I'm after is positive stories for a friend who has a very underweight and slow-to-gain baby of 7 wo.
If your baby was underweight at birth and had weight gain trouble, but not any actual health problem apart from that, how did things work out?
Thanks

i belive sparklygothkat has a thread from today in breast and bottle feeding.

DD was failure to thrive at 6wo.

Only 3 weeks later, she was back on the correct centile, and has continued exactly on it til now at 20mo.

I believe my milk took a while to kick in properly.

Hi, As you know Callum was severe FTT when he was tiny. He is now 8 months and weighes 14lb 11. He is still small at 35 weeks (29 weeks adjusted) but has been hitting his develpomental milestones bang on. He is now rolling, and trying to crawl. he can sit for a few seconds. He has no health problems.

Hi! My baby was FTT, born around or under 7lb ish, bf well (excl bf to 6 months) but gained weight very very very slowly. At 6 months she weighed less than 10lb .

And then we introduced solids...

She now weighs 16lb8 at 10 months!

Although I worried myself SICK, there was never anything wrong with her that anyone could see, and developmentally she was normal. Every healthcare professional I saw seemed hellbent on diagnosing her skinniness as a 'problem', but she has always been fine - she was wonderful when she was skinny, and she's wonderful now.

My story is detailed on the threads here at great length!

Is she bf?

No experience of twins, but can imagine that the logistics of giving each a fair share is tricky.

Just trying to remember which side you fed from last time with one baby was hard enough.

Shitemum · 23/05/2008 23:04

thanks sparkly - Callum is gorgeous! Have followed your story from his birth - definately a success story that one, well done

carrot - So glad your DD is well and thriving. Yes, friend's LO has some bfeeding, some bottle. Cries a lot and seems to have a lot of pain in stomach so they have changed her milk recently and that seems to have helped. She is also being tested for intolerance to cow's milk products...

Has had a week when she gained nothing at all.
Has gained less than a kilo since birth, now weighs about 3 kilos iirc

Both babies were kept in hospital for a week after birth and mother was discharged and had to go in and out to hospital every day. Still managed to get bfeeding going but small baby couldn't suck so was tube fed formula that first week or so. Now mix-feeding.

My DD was on the 75th cent at birth for weight and height. Now still on 75th for height bout on 9th cent for wieght. I recently had to take her to the hosp as on a routine GP visit she was found to have a innocent heart murmur ( which does not effect her health or well being at all). The consultant said she was underweight for her age. However, she eats well, has loads of energy and is a very happy and active child. The health vistors also went on a lot to me and my DP that she was shinky, often making me feel gulity. In my experience you know if your bub is happy and well in their self. Both me and my twin sister were skinny at the same age, and my mum used to get the same comments and worries, but we turned out fine and are both healthy. If theres no underlying health reason for the poor weight gain - i wouldn't worry.

Shitemum · 23/05/2008 23:17

thanks starsparkle - I'm thinking there may be cows' milk intolerance. Mother is going to eliminate cows' milk products from her diet and new formula is one which already has the protein broken down.
Hopefuly LO will start to put it on soon.
Thanks all.

Maybe - I had a cows milk intolerance when i was a baby - all my mum knew that as a baby i was being sick after each feed, this wasn't found out until i was 8 and went for intorlerance tests at the GP's ! I can now drink milk freely and have had no problems as an adult with milk. I often feel that my DD is often being judged on her wieght (even at 2.5 yrs old she can
fit into 12-18 mth clothing) I do believe that the health vistors and baby clinics have added to my anxiety about my DD being skinny. As long asthey are active and happy, eating something too (even though it maybe little) No need to worry

Shitemum · 23/05/2008 23:48

But we should worry when they are so little - 7 weeks old - and not gaining, shouldn't we?
