My dd is 14 months old and eats normally not large portions and lots of fruit and veg. She has always been low on the centiles of the red book and still is only between the 9th and 25th now. So she is not over weight at all.

The thing is she has a really big pot belly that is rock hard. DP has told me I must go to GP and get her checked out. It really is large it looks like a pg belly...

She is my first and I dont want to go to GP if this is normal. So what do you think...

DS has never had it LL. I'd take her just to be on the safe side.

NotABanana · 23/05/2008 20:57

Rock hard sounds like she may be bunged up but I don't know for sure.

I would get some advice.

Grublin · 23/05/2008 20:57

Has she poo'ed recently? could it be that she's a bit 'bunged up'?

beansprout · 23/05/2008 20:57

Toddlers tend to have big bellies, it's v normal!!

liath · 23/05/2008 20:58

Take her if you're worried. My pal, who's a GP herself took her pot-bellied toddler to the GP just to get reassurance. GP won't mind (unlessthey are a total git!!).

avenanap · 23/05/2008 20:58

Constipation or malabsorption. It depends what her poop's like. Tell if you must. I've already eaten.

NotABanana · 23/05/2008 20:58

But rock hard?

Niecie · 23/05/2008 20:59

I would say it is normal. Babies don't have very strong tummy muscles. They are often pot bellied until they are 3 or 4, sometimes longer and then as they get stronger the pot belly disappears.

If you are seriously worried then see a doctors though.

lardylumps · 23/05/2008 21:01

She is pooing about 4 times a day at the moment. They are not formed but not watery and they are very stinky

DS is still pot bellied, he's 8!

get her checked though, just to put your mind at rest.

avenanap · 23/05/2008 21:03

Sounds like malapsorption. She needs to see a doctor. Diarrhoea isn't just sloppy poo, it can be undigested food, it will smell because it's not been absorbed properly. Poor thing

Take her the doc's LL.

Even if it's nothing it's better to have her checked out

Teuch · 25/05/2008 12:08

LL - DS is the same. A skinny wee thing with a roooouuuuuuunnnnd, firm belly!

Sometimes his poos are spectacularly smelly, if he has eaten a lot of fruit for example.

I would take her for the reassurance (try and take a stool sample if you can) just to put your mind at ease.

If you are concerned with wind you could try her with some cooled peppermint tea - this may soothe her insides if there is irritation, too.

But she's been unwell too, hasn't she? DS always gets smelly, soft poo when he is getting over any illness or infection.

jalopy · 25/05/2008 12:28

I'd get her checked by GP. It is normal for some toddlers to be pot-bellied but usually their tummies are soft.

A hard tummy might be full of wind, perhaps she has a food intolerance.

Put your mind at rest and get her assessed.

Tiggiwinkle · 25/05/2008 16:07

Coeliac Disease can cause a big tummy, low weight and smelly, loose stools. Take her to the GP to be checked.

Psychomum5 · 25/05/2008 16:13

my son was and is like this....

they are still querying ceoliac, and he has a DX for a bowel condition already.

he is 5, and his belly has alwasy been likened to a pregnant belly too.

go to the docs...it may be nothing, but also, it may need watching, and you would never forgove yourself if it is something and you never went thro fear of the doc laughing at you for feeling scared etc..

good luck

Hello everyone. Just a quick note to say:

Been to the GP he thinks everything is fine with dd but wants me to go to clinic next monday to have her weighed just incase.

He thinks the bloating and frequent runny poos (sorry tmi)is due to her high fibre diet (she eats lots of fruit and veg). The only concern he has at the mo is her weight, if she is to low on the scale on monday then I have to take her back and he will do further tests on her and we may need to change her diet. She isn't digesting all her food due to her having a fast digestive transit (what ever that means) but that is good and he is not worried in the slightest bit as she is happy and healthy otherwise so must be getting enough goodness from her food.

He has rules out any link between this and the constant illnesses she has had and he puts the colds and coughs down to the time of year and the toddler groups she goes to (children passing germs etc).
