Day after routine mammogram - worried

pussinboots61 · 19/06/2025 19:08

I had a routine mammogram yesterday. About a month ago my GP examined my breasts as I told her they were feeling sore, she examined them throughly and said there wasn't anything there to worry about.

The hospital told me I would get the results from my mammogram in two to three weeks. This is agony for someone like me who suffers from anxiety (health anxiety included). I don't know why they can't give results straight away like they can with x-rays but I can't tell them their iob.

Anyway today I had a missed call on my phone, a mobile number. I called back and a message said 'this person's phoine is switched off.' Usually I would dismiss it as a scam or cold call but now I am terriified its the hospital that have picked something up from my mammogram. But surely if that were the case they would have left a message?

Can anyone put my mind at rest please?

Google the number. They wouldn’t phone from a mobile number.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 19/06/2025 19:14

If your GP said she didn't think there was anything to worry about after actually examining you then this would be a big relief for me - they definitely would not say this if they thought there was a tiny chance of a problem.

I cannot imagine any professional would yet have looked at your mammogram results. If you put the telephone number into google search then if it was from the hospital then it would come up as that number. I very much doubt they'd be calling from a mobile anyway.

Check the number to ut your mind at rest.
Also, sore boobs are not necessarily a sign of breast cancer. I have had BC and didn't have a sore boob at all. Whereas I have had a sore boob on a number of other occasions when it wasn't BC and was just a cyst or just breast tissue soreness after I spent days poking it!
They will let you know OP. But if your GP thought all was well then I'd take comfort in that.

I was asked to come back in after a routine mammogram. They sent me a letter in the post, with an appointment for the following week. No phone call.

Google the number. They wouldn’t phone from a mobile number.

Do this, then you will know. I imagine if the hospital phoned they would leave a voice mail or phone back. I know its easy to say, but you have to try and relax.

Siddalee · 19/06/2025 19:42

Have you got the NHS app? I’ve had a few exploratory procedures and always get notification of any follow up appointments on that at least a day before any other communications.

The call is very likely spam and cold callers..unlikely nhs
Hope you can keep yourswef busy and distracted

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 19/06/2025 19:47

Highly unlikely the call would be made from a mobile number. I understand the health anxiety and you have my sympathy

Google the number. They wouldn’t phone from a mobile number.

Its more likely to show as an unknown or withheld number if from the hospital, as to the delay, it’s all down to reporting, X-rays only get reported on immediately if you are somewhere like a/e

abricotine · 19/06/2025 19:51

If you’re the age to be called for a mammogram, and both boobs are sore, this all sounds very normal Op. sure you’ll hear soon

Choppedcoriander · 19/06/2025 19:53

I was asked to come back after a routine mammogram, my first. They sent me a letter.

Thank you.

Yes it was. The 'unexplained mass' turned out to be a cyst, which they drained the same day.

It's very common to get a call-back when you have your first mammogram. They have nothing to compare the images to, so they don't know what 'normal' is for you.

Messycoo · 19/06/2025 19:56

There reason they cannot give results immediately is due to having two consultants to look at the image to see if there is an anomaly. Also the consultants aren’t sitting beside each other doing the checking. A Doctor wouldn’t know what to look for on the image .

Yes I've recently had mine and my boob's were sore for a day or so afterwards.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/06/2025 21:02

They won’t call you, you’d get a letter. They can’t just tell you your results because they are not qualified radiologists. The radiologist studies the scan and that takes time. It’s unfortunate but it’s how it is. Ex BC patient here.

lifeisacat · 19/06/2025 21:18

I have had a few over the years (horrible lumpy boobs), and always been given results on the day. I assume if there was anything to worry about they would call you before. And it’s highly unlikely the mobile number was them, even with work mobiles, we block the number first!
