Inverted nipple

summer90x · 19/06/2025 17:58

Hello
I made an appointment at doctors for today, around a year or maybe a little more I noticed my right nipple has gone quite flat and inverted. I have no lumps or anything - I went to get checked at doctors and she’s referred me to a breast cancer clinic which has worried me a lot.
I have an apt for 2 weeks time already. Which is amazing.
Has anyone else had this? And was it anything to worry about?
thanks x

Well it’s bound to be a worry for you Summer90x, but you were absolutely right to get it checked and your GP was spot on to do a 2 week referral.
The odds are in your favour that it will be harmless, but they have to rule out cancer as quickly as possible, or get it sorted asap if you are in the unfortunate minority. Easier said than done, but try and stay away from Dr Google and it’s horror stories, and if possible take someone to the appointment with you if you can, there will be a lot to take in and having a supportive person can really help keep you calm.
I hope it all turns out well for you.

summer90x · 19/06/2025 18:26

@FadedRedthank you, hopefully it’s nothing! I feel absolutely fine in myself! But it’s when they say cancer it’s so worrying isn’t it. I haven’t told anyone in my family as I don’t want to worry anyone!
I might ask one of my friends to go xx

@summer90x Oh yes, the waiting and worrying is the worst, it will seem the longest two weeks of your life. Are you able to confide in someone you can trust to support you and that you won’t feel you have to support them iyswim? It’s a difficult time to be completely alone.

summer90x · 19/06/2025 18:33

Yes it’s going to drag! Yes I may tell my friend and ask her to come with me, hopefully it’s nothing - that’s why I don’t want to say anything to my family! It’s also a worry as it’s been like this for a year so now I’m worrying I left it way too late but surely if that was the case I’d be getting other symptoms wouldn’t I xx

Were you not aware you should report any breast changes, particularly unilateral changes? A newly inverted nipple, discharge , lump, crusting, pain should always be checked out. Some women have always had inverted nipples and that’s fine but any new changes need checking. Hopefully all clear. It’s horrible waiting. Been through this twice and both times ok thank goodness. Wishing you the same

greengreyblue · 19/06/2025 18:38

Did the gp check for any lumps? How old are you op?

summer90x · 19/06/2025 18:39

Yes I was. But i had a baby and it happened after having him, so for this time I assumed it was related to changes on my boobs due to breast milk. But it’s still like it and so I decided I needed to get checked! I’m so glad you was ok both times, what a relief. Hopefully it is to do with changes after having baby and it’s nothing! Just want the appointment to be now! Did you find out everything is ok on the day of the apt or do you need to wait? Xx @greengreyblue

@greengreyblueyes she checked for lumps and so did I and thankfully none! I am 35 years old! X

greengreyblue · 19/06/2025 18:43

Aha that sounds more like it’s related to your milk ducts. Yes I found out both times. Both times were lumps:
1- fibrroadenoma- ultrasound and biopsy. Told almost certain ok but waited a week for results.
2- cyst- liquid drawn off at appointment.

summer90x · 19/06/2025 19:09

@greengreyblue how worrying for you!! Glad it wasn’t anything like that, there’s a lot of history of it on my mums side! Both my aunties sadly passed. One of them had a Braca gene is it? So my mum got tested and didn’t have it so we never got tested. But I’m hoping for a positive outcome, I hope it is milk ducts as did happen after that! Thank you for chatting to me about it xx

No worries. Good luck!

Hi @summer90x
Sorry to revive this thread, i found it in a search.

How did the clinic go? I'm hoping it was good news for you.

I have the same problem. Suddenly noticed one of my nipples is inverted and crease inwards across the middle.

How quickly did you get your appointment?

I noticed the change on holiday 2 weeks ago, went to GP last Thursday who referred on the urgent pathway. Had my appointment through today and it's for 21st Oct. So 4 weeks after I saw the doctor, 5 weeks since I noticed the issue but in truth could have been going on much longer.

Supposed to be 2 week pathway.

Newshoesnewname · 02/10/2025 23:49

Indeed, but this is the soonest appointment.

It's apparently called the urgent suspected cancer referral now and the target is to be seen within 2 weeks and get the results within 28 days.

Since the clinic in my area is a one stop shop with mammogram, ultrasound, bloods, biopsy and consultation all done in the same appointment, they say it should still meet the 28 days more or less.

notapizzaeater · 02/10/2025 23:54

I had this over the summer, I’ve one nipple become inverted. Put on the pathway. Had mammogram and ultrasound and all clear with no reason.

Thats good news. I'm pleased for you.

I don't have any other symptoms. And neither GP or I can feel any lumps so fingers crossed mine will be ok too.

summer90x · 03/10/2025 06:44

Hello -@Newshoesnewname aww I hope everything will be ok! I got referred within 2 weeks and it said on my appointment suspected cancer, which is daunting but it’s a way to get seen quicker! I went to the breast clinic and thank god everything was fine. She told me if you can move it back out (so it’s not inverted) it’s a good sign! So I can move mine back out but it goes back in after! They was so lovely there - you will be fine.let me know xxxx

I'm so glad it was good news for you and your experience was positive.

That is also useful to know about it popping back out. It's the reason I have no idea how long mine has been inverted. I never get dressed in front of the mirror, and when in the shower etc it is out as normal. I was on holiday so it was hot and the bathroom mirror was huge. I noticed it wasn't right, and since then it's become clear that it's resting position is the inverted one. As soon as the cool air hits or I touch it it pops back out.

I'm quite relieved that might be a good sign.

Rocknrollstar · 03/10/2025 10:04

I mentioned my inverted nipple when I went for a mammogram. They did an ultrasound sound and a biopsy with a local anaesthetic there and then. It turned out to be nothing to worry about. But always good to have it checked out.

The concern is if it is tethered by a growing tumour. If it pops out it’s not the ones they worry about

Newshoesnewname · 25/10/2025 09:44

Just wanted to pop back on in case anyone finds this thread later.

Breast clinic last Tuesday and all was fine.

Nipple inversion put down to duct ectasia

greengreyblue · 25/10/2025 12:39

Marvellous news! 😀
