Rash on DS's leg - don't know what else to try....any ideas please? [pic included]

My son has had a rash on his leg/tops of feet for 6 weeks. He came home one day after playing in grass and the rash started.
Tried some zerobase as thought it was a bit of dry skin rash. Didn't help. Took him to pharmacy they suggested maybe ringworm and gave cream. 2 weeks later no better and rash spread. Went to another pharmacy and they advised hydrocortisone cream. Another 2 weeks and still no signs of clearing up so we went to the GP. GP said maybe ringworm and again gave cream. In the week we have been using the cream the rash has got significantly worse and is spreading up his leg.
Unable to get drs appointment (these are apparently like gold dust these days) and son is fed up and miserable the rash is now irritating him and oozing slightly.
Any ideas or recommendations greatly appreciated.
First image is before we went to GP and second is since using the cream GP prescribed

Local walk in centre? I know it would be a long wait but probably worth it to see a doctor.

We don't have a local walk in centre. Only place we can walk in would be the a&e department at our local hospital

mmm looks like might be infected with bacteria, can pharmacist not prescribe Fucidin cream?

I think I'm going to try the pharmacy again. Last time she wasn't sure what it was and said to try gp. I will see if they can give him Fucidin, thank you

Dd gets eczema that looks like this, it flares with hayfever and her legs get very splotchy if she walks in long grass. It requires sustained treatment to keep on top of and if it flares badly it becomes a nightmare to get rid of.

She takes clarityn daily once once pollen levels start increasing, use zerobase morning and night and she rinses off legs and arms as soon as she gets home if she’s been playing on the field.

If it flares up then she gets into a scratch-itch cycle where she scratches it which makes it itchier which makes her scratch more, which makes it itchier and so on.

Then we bring out the big guns, Hydrocortisone cream, let that soak in, then zerobase, 100% cotton loose thin long pjs so she can’t get her nails into her skin during the night, try to keep her as cool as possible, and baths/showers Luke warm only so it doesn’t aggravate her skin or cause her to sweat. There have been times when she’s almost skinned herself and woken up to blood all over the sheets from where she’s scratched holes in her legs so nails kept short and if we’re desperate I use bandages to wrap her legs after the cream has soaked in so they are protected while she sleeps.

Try pharmacy again.

looks like impetigo to me.

PurpleThistle7 · 19/06/2025 15:35

I would go back. I’d say you should try antihistamines but this looks really sore so probably past that stage.

my daughter has eczema and lots of allergies so have seen a lot!

ladymalfoy45 · 19/06/2025 15:38

Anti antihistamines. Anthisan cream. If he's been out on the school field it could be an allergy to something but chemist deffo.

chowebella · 19/06/2025 17:42

Thank you all for your comments. Popped to the chemist again, he's insisted I go back to the GP, he said even push for an emergency appointment so we will go back there tomorrow.
Going to try an antihistamine tonight to see if it brings down the raised bumps and stops the itching. He's forever in the grass playing football so maybe a reaction to grass 🤷

Looks like impetigo to me too especially as it's getting worse and spreading. Be very careful with towels, wash straight after use.

Did GP confirm what rash was? I had similar rash on front of leg and top of foot. Pharmacist said non-fungal infection (poss ringworm) told me use Clotrimazole 1% cream 2-3 times a day, should go in 5-7 days or see GP. Can also use Canesten Athletes Foot as same cream.
