Sedation or General Anaesthetic

Been told I have to have a wisdom tooth removed in hospital and have been given the choice of sedation or general anaesthetic. Which would you choose and why? I have never had a reason to have either before and it’s my first tooth extraction. Im quite nervous about it and have been told that it will most likely be a difficult extraction lasting an hour or longer.

I would be going under general anaesthetic, you never know how strong or weak the sedation will be and Im also a big wimp when it comes to teeth stuff !

My son had a difficult extraction under local anaesthetic at the dentist - tooth had to be broken to get it out and he was fine. He couldn’t feel anything. I’d go for sedation. You won’t remember much of it.

What has the doctor said? I'd have a GA personally, it's very low risk - I had one on Monday afternoon and was pretty much back to normal by 8pm (a bit dopey before that).

I would say local as the injections used nowadays by dentists ime are great and you don’t feel anything - though there might be a bit crunching and pulling with a wisdom tooth. Would that upset you.

Sedation is fucking amazing! And you can leave much quicker after too as long as somebody is driving you.

It mentioned “IV sedation” so I think this may be the stronger than the gas?! still not sure if strong enough for me though 😬

I don’t think local is even an option however that definitely would upset me haha so I don’t think I could do it

If it is expected to be difficult and take an hour or more then just having it under local would not be recommended. @dillydally79 IV sedation is good stuff and you will have an anaesthetist with you who can top you up with more sedation if the initial dose is enough.

I had all four out under GA. They broke one of the adjacent teeth, and my dentist said from the amount of scar tissue, he could see they were difficult extractions. I was glad to be out of it!
