Infected cut on toe and leaving for airport in less than 2 hours

I woke up this morning to some pus coming out of it and it’s a 24 hour flight home. Will salon cream and a plaster be enough until I can get to the GP on Friday? It’s a cut underneath my toe in the knuckle crease so walking on it is quite sore .

How do you know it's infected?

SirChenjins · 17/06/2025 23:19

Sorry - edited to say pus was coming out of it this morning when I woke up

I would think it would be fine, just deal with it when you get home

Heartofglass12345 · 17/06/2025 23:28

I’m sure it’ll be fine, can you soak it in some warm water then dress it so it’s protected?

SirChenjins · 17/06/2025 23:32

I’ve washed it and put savlon and a plaster on - it’s so sore to walk on ☹️

Daughter had this earlier this year..it really hurt. Chemist recommended a tiny pot of Magnesium sulphate paste..dab it on cut & cover with a plaster. He said it is a drawing paste & would pull the infection out of the cut. I was sceptical as it seemed old fashioned & a bit quackery but it worked & the swelling, pain & infection were gone in 24 hours.

Aww, it’s in a really awkward place. My son used to get splits in the skin creases underneath his big toe and they used to get sore. Hopefully some rest when you get home and maybe a visit to the nurse or GP.

If your flight home is that long, you might be in or find yourself in a country where you can buy antibiotic cream in the airport.

SirChenjins · 17/06/2025 23:40

Thanks @Combinatoric @Ponderingwindow good shout - I’ll see if I can get either of them at a chemist at one of the airports we go through.

Yes - I'd go to a pharmacy at the airport and see what they suggest.

Annascaul · 17/06/2025 23:42

If it’s draining, all you really need to do is keep it clean?

I developed a toe infection just as I left for a holiday last year. By the following morning, I could hardly walk - and I was on a river cruise, due to go on various excursions. I spoke the Cruise Director who suggested a remote consultation with a doctor via EUDoctor. I think it cost about 30 euros.

I had a video call with a doctor within 15 minutes - She was in Croatia. She listened to my description and asked to see my toe via video (tricky to do this when having a consultation on a tablet), and subsequently prescribed antibiotics. I was lucky as the cruise director then went to the pharmacy (in a small French town where we were moored) to collect these for me. It was a very good service and thought I could do with using something similar at home given the difficulties in getting to see a GP. Anyway, after a day, I was able to join in with everyone else for the rest of the cruise.

It's worth a try if you're in Europe, OP.

@pandora206 no, other side of the world unfortunately (although it was an amazing holiday!)
