My girlfriend is drinking a huge amount of water everyday or most days when she is at work.

I have told her to go to the docs which she will but what in particular should she be checked for apart from diabetes? Anything else?

All advice is appreciated.

OMG!
Is she thirsty or is it a misguided health thing?

belgo · 23/05/2008 10:24

That is too much water. How is her health in general?

Thirst can be a sign of diabetes. I've also heard that drinking huge amounts of water can be some sort of eating disorder.

She does need to see the doctor. Do you think she will follow your advice?

slayerette · 23/05/2008 10:25

diabetes is the big concern. She must get it checked out because drinking too much water is not just a symptom of something, it can cause problems in itself - I remember that an actor was rushed to hospital after drinking seven litres of water in a day on a very hot day's filming - it can be very dangerous (but can't remember why...)

cheesesarnie · 23/05/2008 10:25

i cant think apart from diabetes.but omg!!!

jellyjelly · 23/05/2008 10:25

Yes she is going to go, fine in general health wise.

She is thirsty and drinks when she is. Pees alot too but i guess you would if you were drinking that much.

It can be dangerous because it can disturb the electrolyte balance in the body (that's bad), as the kidneys cannot work fast enough to get rid of the water.

jellyjelly · 23/05/2008 10:26

Is it the dilution of salts etc in the body. Have told her not to drink much.

I just need to see if there is anything else that she needs to ask for????

How is she if she doesn't drink that much water?

I could easily get through 6L of water a day (well, fluid.... probably cordial or orange juice)

I found being pregnant, I was constantly thirsty (I also went to the Drs. to be checked for diabetes and was fine)

I've now had my DS - totally stress free pregnancy and birth - and have found that my thirst has gone down but I still drink pints and pints of orange or orange and lemonade...

As far as I know, I am perfectly healthy...

nickytwotimes · 23/05/2008 10:29

It could have become habitual?

nickytwotimes · 23/05/2008 10:30

by which I mean she thinks she's thirsty when she isn't physiologically in need of liquid.

Weegiemum · 23/05/2008 10:30

As far as I know its if you dont normally drink that much then suddenly do it, then you have problems. But regularly drinking all that water you get used to it. I have a kidney condition and on medical advice drink 5 litres a day to keep them flushed through (stops stones and crystals forming).

But if she is drinking that much cos she is thirsty, that could be a problem. However, if she was diabetic, she woudl be pretty sick by now - acute onset of diabetes puts you in a coma in just a few days.

jellyjelly · 23/05/2008 10:31

She has said that her grandparents on both sides have it or had it and mum gets checked often.

One of the symptoms of Diabetes Insipidus is drinking a lot.

jellyjelly · 23/05/2008 10:49

jellyjelly · 25/05/2008 16:21

OP posts:
LIZS · 25/05/2008 16:37

is she trying to lose weight ?

jellyjelly · 27/05/2008 10:06

She is naturally losing weight as she is here alot and i have a healthier diet.

She has got a funny mole on her leg which was red and bleeding the other day and then got knocked off.

Connected?

OP posts:
nervousal · 27/05/2008 10:09

don't think it would be connected - but something else worth checking with GP - looks like she'll need a double appointment

fluffyanimal · 27/05/2008 10:10

I'd be surprised if the mole was connected. I have a lot of moles and some of them stick out and if they get knocked, they do bleed a lot, but that is quite normal. It's only if they suddenly change shape, size or colour that you need to get moles checked.

No idea about the water however.

jellyjelly · 27/05/2008 16:48

I will try to stop worrying about her so much.
