Recurrent throat infections: ENT referral

Has anyone been to ENT for recurrent throat infections? I typically have about 5-6 weeks sick leave per year with them. Appointment has come through and not sure what to expect but I'm assuming the doctor won't do much?

Do u mean tonsillitis?

ChocolateLemsip · 16/06/2025 12:36

Yes tonsillitis or other throat infections, I don't know exact the cause.

Well sometimes they take the tonsils out surgically. I had mine taken out at 23 because of a year of monthly throat infections. I think I had glandular fever and didn't realise tho.

It was life changing having them removed. For the better.

It was a lot more common years ago to have them taken out on the nhs, now they’ve very reluctant to do so. As a kid and teen, I had tonsillitis at least twice a year and it would be severe that it could last months at a time - I had them taken out no issue.

my son on the other hand is five and gets tonsiltis every other month at this rate, he often is hospitalised with severe temperature and overall unwell with it. Yet he’s been waiting since he was 2 to have them removed because they seem really reluctant to do so nowadays.

I was referred a couple of years ago after constantly having a sore throat. Consultant was very thorough and put camera down my nose to see my throat, he didn’t see anything to cause concern and fortunately I got better. My Cousin saw a Consultant nearly 2 years ago now and is still waiting for a date to have her tonsils out, she has a 2 week course of antibiotics nearly every 2 months, she was told 18 months, but it’s 2 years next month.

@beesandstrawberries sorry to hear about your DS, that's awful.
