Magnesium and stomach issues

OhMyGiddyAunt · 14/06/2025 09:42

I bought some nutrition Geeks Magnesium Glycinate supplements recently to help with sleep, energy levels and overall wellbeing.

A couple of the reviews mentioned that they found caused an upset stomach or stomach cramps.

Well I'm on day 4 and had diarrhoea every morning after taking them the night before.

Anyone had this happen? Will it get better or is it likely to happen every time?

No. Magnesium citrate is actually used as a laxative, but magnesium glycinate doesn't give me any issues. You could try another brand or dosage.

PomeloOud · 14/06/2025 09:54

I take magnesium glycinate before bed and almost every morning I have a very loose bowel movement. Sometimes quite urgently!

It doesn’t bother me.

OhMyGiddyAunt · 14/06/2025 10:28

Sounds like it's not going to get better then.

I might try just one capsule instead of 2

Maybe switch brands? I use MG every night - 2 tablets - for nearly a year and I don’t have any stomach issues. I use NaturesPlus.

GoodOnPaper · 14/06/2025 12:32

You can get a magnesium spray so you absorb is subcutaneously (through the skin) and avoid any impact on your gut and stomach issues. I have one from Harrogate organics and it’s lasted ages.

GarlicMile · 14/06/2025 12:32

Yes. You're MUCH better off absorbing magnesium through the skin. Your body will take up as much as it needs, then stop. Get some Epsom salts and put them in your bath, make a foot soak or use with your shower gel.

(cross-posted with above: you can also get a spray)

Try magnesium in a powder, tablets always upset my stomach.

Laurelandhearty · 14/06/2025 12:34

Magnesium glycinate unsettles my stomach too. I’ve switched to taurate which is much better.

OhMyGiddyAunt · 14/06/2025 14:09

Thak you for suggestions so far.

I didn't realise it was available as a spray.
I might look into that or a different make.

Same here! I quite like a daily clear out!

I have just posted about this in General Health, thank goodness its not just me!

I get you with the VERY urgent, I had a mishap two days ago, rushing upstairs to the loo. Taking 2x440mg Magnesium Citrate per night.

Same here with Mag Citrate.. totally TMI .. like water and urgent!

ManchesterMarie · 26/07/2025 15:28

I could have written this! I’ve only just linked my horrific stomach issues to the magnesium drinks I got a free trial of. Currently doubled over in bed hoping it passes soon - took my last one on Thursday night and won’t be taking anymore!

OhMyGiddyAunt · 26/07/2025 19:46

Hello! Original OP here .... I cut back to 1 a day and it's loads better.

Although ....TMI coming up here ..... even with 1 a day, the first thing I do in the morning is have a poo. It's sometimes the reason I have to get up too.

Not ideal I know but it's a price I'm willing to pay as it's helped my sleep and stopped the racing mind in the middle of the night.

the benefits to sleep are amazing, agreed, the inconvenience can be VERY touch and go.. 😅

I take this brand- only 1 tablet though and yes it did give me some issues in the first week but fine after that. I’d lower the dose and try for a bit longer…

SqueamishHamish · 27/07/2025 10:45

Can you tell me the brand of magnesium you use? I would benefit from the laxative effect. I currently take Magnesium Ok but it is out of stock everywhere.

SallyPar · 27/07/2025 10:49

At the moment its Nutra Vita Magnesium Citrate 440mg

SaintGermain · 27/07/2025 10:51

I’ve bought this for my mother as she started having restless legs and interrupted sleep.

She rubs a tiny amount into her belly button at bedtime and the result is a deep sleep and no restless legs.

She did say if she used too much it does result in an urgent bowel movement doesn’t thing in the morning so she knows just how much to use now.

I have it in subscription on Amazon and have it sent directly to her.

If it's causing issues, a 20 min weekly soak in an Espom salts bath has a really good effect. My bones literally feel more relaxed after that and a good night sleep.

Better You also does a body lotion with magnesium, though I find a little itchy the first time.

Don’t want to tell you what to do, but please consider that in your case you might also not be absorbing vitamins and minerals if your intestine function is too fast.
