Private insurance in Uk, what do you pay

Just what the title says
I get it throigh work and realised I was paying close to £14 per month for me and my partner, for the most basic tier, and it covers me for things ranging from prescription, consults, glasses, and dental - - all really valuable. I have had physiotherapy, osteopath appointments, glasses and eye tests every year, and even visits to the dentist all covered. It saves me a few£100 every year.

I could also pay around £50 to ramp up how much I get covered.

I have been thinking of going freelance and the thought of losing health insurance worries me.

So my question is, does any of you get your health insured privately? What is your monthly outgoing like and is it worth it?

Er, mine is over 300pm. I do have pre existing conditions which are covered.

Go on to the Bupa website and you’ll get a quote very quickly.

That sounds more like a health cash plan than actual private medical cover. Quite different (I have both).

You're probably right but I also have both
One is from Bupa and the other is the health cash plan. What's the difference? They're both from work so I haven't looked at it critically. Can you get a health cash plan privately?

Work premiums will be discounted and much cheaper than you purchasing. Eg when i retired insurers of my work scheme quoted 2k per month for my husband and I to continue with the same level of cover. My employer paid a lot less for both of us as the scheme was rated based on the whole workforce so a much greater spread of risk.

I get Bupa through work. I think work subsidise it though I put about £50 a month for me, husband and daughter. Plus got the dental option too now as I had a panic we’d not be able to afford dentistry as impossible to find nhs spaces.

Edited cuz I just completely lied ha! Looked at my payslip
£88 for medical
£23 for dentist

So a lot more than I thought! Still worth it though.

I get private healthcare through my work and the cost is met by my employer. I then pay about £60 a month for both my kids to be on (we have utilised it for thousands of pounds worth of investigations and consultant appointments for my eldest who has a health condition) and it is the same cost for kids whether you have just 1 or multiple. It's £80 a month to add my husband but we can't afford that currently so it's just me and the kids

Hah.. I thought I was paying around£30-40 too went to check and it was a £100 for me, hubby and kids at the top tier, we don't even use it as much so I've gone and changed it back to the lowest tier.

But thinking of what I'd do if I left and went freelance, because it's always comforting to know there's the private insurance to fall back on whenever it's needed...

Over a hundred pounds per person, but we are 55 with pre existing conditions which are included

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 13/06/2025 20:18

DH’s cover with Bupa is paid for by work, so he pays tax on that. We then pay £110 I think a month to add me and 3 DC the policy.

FalseSpring · 14/06/2025 07:59

Mine is over £300 a month. I have pre-existing conditions that are covered and my family are included so it actually covers 5 individuals including children.

15.50 with Benenden. I'm not really sure what I'm covered for but the GP service is good.
