Hair thinning at front - any advice please?

In my early thirties and have noticed over the last few months that my hair has started to thin out a bit at the front of my scalp, just above my forehead. My hair is very fair - blonde/light brown - and the thinning isn’t that extensive, so luckily it’s not very noticeable.

I would like to see if I can stop it getting worse though and also try to work out what’s causing it, as I love my hair and feel a bit shocked by the thinning - even though, granted, there are worse things!! I’m not sure if it’s worth making an appointment with my GP over it as it is really a cosmetic thing.

In terms of my medical history, my general health is good. I’m not on any medication, not on the pill or pregnant, eat a generally healthy diet, don’t smoke or take drugs and drink alcohol maybe once a week or so. I get my hair cut every six months or so, but have never used any treatments on it. I am considering highlights to make it blonder, but am now rethinking if that’s a good idea, in case it makes the thinning worse.

There’s no history of baldness - female or male - in my family and both my parents and my siblings have good heads of hair.

Any general advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

Just to add I wear my hair in a ponytail or bun most days, but not so tight that it hurts my head or hair. I wouldn’t think this would contribute to the thinning, but am not sure.

Use a hair growth specific supplement
My hair is starting to thin too. Obvious answer would be see a dermatologisf and get a prescription for minoxidil but other remedies proven to be as useful include haircare with dermarollers on scalp and rosemary to stimulate growth.

Also if you are using hair shampoos and conditioners everyday, especially leave in conditioner I would dial down how often i use those as some of them are full of nasties

Thanks Chalatte, and sorry you’re in the same boat. Can I ask what you use to help, please? Or are you not using anything yet?

I have a derma roller that I've put to use on my scalp and I use it along with some rosemary containing oil I found in tkmax (no extra additive just the rosemary in an oil base). I've been meaning to make me own using rosemary from the garden but honestly it's getting the time to do it that's been my biggest challenge. Not gone the hair vitamins route yet but amazon have a few possibilities...

Try Routine shampoo and conditioner. Expensive but lasts ages and is ŵell worth it. Game changer.

No joke, but Regaine for men. It will work

notnorman · 13/06/2025 23:00

Minoxidil

i would get a private blood test to check for any nutritional deficiencies- iron, active b12 etc. you need them all to be optimal levels for regrowth.

try a good multivitamin (get the blood test before supplementing). Not supermarket brands like perfectil that don’t contain active/more bioavailable types of vitamins.

minoxidil is an option, but you need to commit to it for at least a year to see if it works, then if you stop the hair will return to previous state. You can use the men’s regaine once a day and not pay the pink tax on the women’s (same ingredients but more expensive). You can also try nirazol kcz treatment shampoo once or twice a week, but try to keep to scalp as very drying for hair

My hair is a bit like this following substantial weight loss, following thread with interest

It's unusual in women go to doctors it could be alapicia or just stress. There is no rhyme or reason for hair loss my sons both went bald in twenties although fathers didn't I always joked it was putting up with me lol. My sons born with lots of hair, sisters sons bald as coots, sisters boys have lots of hair maybe it's that? I only wash hair once a week which has made mine grow stronger and no shampoo only conditioner
