Tooth extraction - dry socket ?

Toothfairy10 · 13/06/2025 08:56

I had my tooth extracted 3 days ago. I have a slight sore throat and jaw discomfort. My breath also smells very bad. I wonder if it looks like I have a dry socket. That is the clearest pic I can take with my mobile. Thank you 🙏

I don’t really have severe pain.

I can't see a photo. I had dry socket and it was very painful. The dentist cleaned it out and put something in to heal it and I had antibiotics. If you think you have dry socket starting I'd phone the dentist now and hopefully he will see you today, you don't want this left over the weekend.

I'm in my 70s and it was the first, and only, tooth I'd had extracted and if wasn't a pleasant experience.

I don’t really have severe pain.

It is only day 3, if it is dry socket it's going to get worse. I left it five days and regretted it.

Thank you so much. It’s worse than day two but the smell is still horrendous. I will monitor it until next Monday

I meant it’s no worse than day two

I was as you described and it didn’t turn into dry socket. I would get it checked though

Dry socket is when the blood doesn't clot where the tooth has been extracted so food debris can get in and cause an infection. From your photo it looks as though you have a blood clot there and not just a hole?

Also to add the jaw discomfort could be from the injection. I had that after a tooth extraction.

I really appreciate everyone's quick and helpful replies. I can see something red under a white layer in the extraction site, and I'm hoping it's not a dry socket. Even though I have a bit of pain now, I haven't needed painkillers since yesterday since it's manageable for me (I'm pretty used to pain from my tattoos and nose piercing)

My husband helped me take a clearer picture. He said my hole looks like it's rotting

My extraction looked like that, red under white layer. It was fine. Keep using salt water mouth washes, but obviously if the pain gets worse, see your dentist.

Call the dentist. Email the photo. If you do it now they can check it before the weekend. You don't want to find half way through the weekend that it's all blown up.

Agree with this.

Mine smelled and tasted awful from day 3 to 6 but it was fine. Once the stitches fell out it mostly went - I think they got coated in bits of food and it was rotting on them.

Your socket looks full and you are not in much pain so dry socket is unlikely. Jaw aches are quite normal - the extraction is quite rough on the entire area. I got a massive bruise that came out on my cheek after a few days and the ache got better as it faded. I'm in week four now after having the exact same tooth as you taken out.

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/06/2025 12:23

Send the photo to the dentist but I think that’s what it is supposed to look like. The red is probably the clot and white is where it’s starting to heal over.

Dry socket is extremely painful, like a pounding sensation of pain all the time. (I know from experience unfortunately, after a bad wisdom tooth extraction) So it doesn't sound like that, but get it checked if it starts feeling worse. Typically it comes on about 2 days after the extraction.

I really appreciate all your helpful replies.

This is the story why I had to get my tooth removed. I decided to have my amalgam fillings replaced with white composite fillings several months ago, as I had heard concerns about amalgam's health effects. However, after the change, I experienced severe pain every time I chewed, which eventually led to a root canal last week. Unfortunately, that procedure also went wrong, and I ultimately had to have the tooth removed. Now, I'm facing the expense of a dental implant, and I really regret not having kept the amalgam fillings.
On top of that, we've been having a lot of mice in our terraced house ceiling at night, which has severely disrupted my sleep. I haven't been able to sleep for the past three days. Because of all this stress and lack of sleep, I'm starting to worry that I might be developing an infection due to a lowered immune system.
