Omeprazole for acid reflux

twiglet123 · 12/06/2025 08:17

I have been having acid reflux very evening after dinner and occasionally when I go running in the morning. GP has prescribed Omeprazole for 1 month then review. Has anyone had any success with this and if it does work, do you just keep taking it….forever? Anyone not got on with it? I already have IBS (mainly bloating) and im
worried Omeprazole may make this worse

It worked for me, for a while. When it stopped I switched to Lansoprazole and that's been keeping a lid on the symptoms for years.

Pelifor · 12/06/2025 21:42

PPIs work but I wouldn't want to take them long term. Better to use them until you feel better.
I had gastritis a couple of years ago. It took many months of a boring bland diet to get back to normal. Nothing spicy or acidic, no alcohol, nothing that sets it off.

Imisscoffee2021 · 12/06/2025 21:45

Omeprazole is my favourite ever medicine. I had inexplicable reflux that presents in my back weirdly, got the worst back pain and felt incredibly fatigued all the time. Had three month course of omeprazole and its never come back. No clue what it was or why but omeprazole fettled it.

Trinity69 · 12/06/2025 21:48

I’ve used omeprazole before with success but I don’t think it’s advised for long term use.

Pebbles16 · 12/06/2025 21:52

Omeprazole works for some - I prefer Lansoprazole (less contra-indications with other medications I take).
Yes, in an ideal world, a short term solution. I am on them for life unless I want to lose my voice - and I never have had classic symptoms of acid reflux.
Admittedly my digestive tract is "a unique and unfortunate anomaly" (as noted by my consultant!

QwestSprout · 12/06/2025 21:52

It's perfectly possible to take it forever - I have severe GORD caused by hEDS and I will have to take Esomeprazole for the rest of my life. You just have to be aware of the lack of absorption of certain vitamins and minerals and adjust your diet.

But I really wouldn't worry about that yet if you've only been on it a month. If yours is caused by something treatable like H Pylori or diet changes for instance, then it won't be forever.

Lullabycrickets23 · 12/06/2025 22:05

I have took it and now Lansoprazole. They work if you take them regularly. But they take a few weeks to properly ease symptoms.
I did adjust my diet quite a bit as I find that that’s what helps most to be honest. Whenever I am in a bad place stomach/intestine wise I go with rice boiled fish and peas 😂 works for me !
With proper diet I did stop for a while as I know about risks to osteoporosis for example, but I would take them quite regularly.

JustFeedMeCake · 12/06/2025 22:11

It made me really ill so I was changed over to Esomeprazole which works just fine and I have been on it for a long time and like another poster said with their drug, it’s keeps a lid on it. If I don’t take it, it’s unbearable.

justasking111 · 12/06/2025 22:19

I've had it on and off for years. 5cm sliding hiatus hernia. On it again at the moment after gastritis, ibuprofen, because of the painkillers I have to take. I still stick to a low fat non spicy diet. With omeprazole and gaviscon it's under control again.

Fallulah · 12/06/2025 22:21

It upset my stomach so I switched to Lansoprazole a year or so ago. It controls the symptoms really well unless I happen to have a few spicy meals in a row, then it can’t cope and I am in pain!

I had read about not being able to take these medications long term but my GP said you can. 🤔

Gattopardo · 12/06/2025 23:46

How old are you and is there any reason why you’d suddenly have developed this?

ie, pregnancy, developed a hernia, h pylori, taking Mounjaro, any major dietary changes?

I wouldn’t want to just medicate the symptoms without finding the cause.

justasking111 · 13/06/2025 00:15

I always remember having acid issues. Pregnancy pushed it over the edge into hiatus hernia. Fatty foods always made me ill.

WeAllHaveWings · 13/06/2025 00:57

it works great for acid reflux, but can cause issues if used long term. I have B12 deficiency nerve damage due to 8 years on omeprazole , they can also impact bone density and cause other issues.

Try to resolve why you need them, mine was diet and weight related, and get off them as soon as possible. I am now on every other day B12 injections to try to repair the nerve damage (have to organise myself as Dr not interested)

SmileForInstantBeauty · 13/06/2025 02:06

I used to take prescribed Omeprazole, didn’t like the reviews on long term use.
I instead drink acv (with mother), and if I still get trouble digestive wise, I use slippery elm.

what I do helps me enormously, and I’m so grateful, but it may not be for everyone.

MissSmiley · 13/06/2025 06:47

I'm supposed to be on it for life following cancer surgery three years ago that gave me a reconstructed digestive system but it started to make me really sick about six months ago, I stopped taking it for an endoscopy recently and felt so much better without it

Ibuprofen was what set my gastritis off. I have a haitys hernia which normally causes no problem.
Long term PPIs can affect bone density and I already have osteoporosis so I use with caution. I avoid NSAIDs but if I have to take them I take a PPI as well for as short a time as possible

twiglet123 · 13/06/2025 09:23

Thank you all. I’m 46, slim, eat healthily and don’t drink much alcohol and this literally came out of nowhere. As someone said I think it would be good to find out the cause. GP has ordered some blood tests but not sure what she is looking for?
Currently on day 2 of taking Omeprazole so probably too early to tell if it’s working. GP has given me a month on tablets then I have to go back

I’ve been prescribed this medication today for exactly the same reasons. I’m also 46. I’ve read that acid reflux can start around our age due to perimenopause and hormone changes
