Sinus infection - when does it get better?!

Anyone who’s suffered from sinus infection before please I’d love to hear your experiences and what finally helped? I’m on antibiotics and sooooo impatient to feel better. Absolutely wiped out, headache and just sleeping / resting.

I’m sorry, it took months! Two months of antibiotics and steroids until I was better, I felt a little better after a week but full recovery was two months.

Antihistamine62 · 11/06/2025 17:06

Just had my third course of antibiotics 2x 5 days doxy and 7 days clarithromycin. I felt better for maybe a day or two but can feel the pressure starting to build again

SancerreSummerWine · 11/06/2025 17:27

Mine turned into chronic rhinosinisitus. But I did already have asthma so more susceptible I would think.

Definitely try antihistines along with the antibiotics if you’re not already taking them. They all work slightly differently so might need trial and error to find one that works. If the pain persists when antibiotics finished then go back to GP. I lived in pain for weeks unnecessarily.

Thanks all. Sounds like stamina will be required. Currently on first round of doxy. Keeping everything crossed.

I was on mometazone nasal spray but it gave me insomnia and high heart rate so I had to stop. Now trying fluticasone nasal spray (Pirinase) instead.

@SancerreSummerWine what antihistamines do you take for it?

It took a few for me to find the one that worked for me. GP suggested trying all the ones available over the counter. There isn’t one suggested for sinisitus - just individual trial and error. I had been nearly through them all when I tried the Benadryl 3 a day ones (I had already tried Benadryl once a day which didn’t work - I didn’t realise different active ingredients). I knew within a day this one helped in a way the many I had taken before didn’t. I still take piriton too at bedtime, as that’s the only one that stops my itchy skin!

I have a steroid nasal spray too and eye drops as my eyes got itchy but I’m not sure which brand it was. I again lived with itchy eyes for months! Then got something over the counter which felt like it burned them. The GP gave me the right stuff first go,

I’ve gained some weight on a new medication for something else and that’s really not helped either - so trying to get that off again.

Thanks @SancerreSummerWine glad you eventually found one that worked.

Steam.

My GP told me to go to the steam room at my gym and leave a box of tissues outside the door. Go in for as long as you can stand, then come out and blow it all out. Repeat.

However, I did this at a time when the place was empty.... Because it's disgusting. But it worked along with the pills.

Maybe long hot showers twice a day!

Mine got better when I had a cracked tooth out.
20 years I had sinus issues on one side. Tooth out, trouble disappeared.

lolomoon · 11/06/2025 20:16

Neilmed sinus rinse really helps. I’ve suffered for years…. (You can get it on Amazon) as well as pharmacy’s. It really is the worst… hope you feel better soon OP

Fleurty · 11/06/2025 20:18

I have regular sinus infections and cant take antibiotics because it causes crohns disease flares for me, I do warm saline rinses with a neti pot - it hurts to start with but it does help afterwards. Also steaming gives temporary relief from the symptoms - bowl of boiled water with some olbus oil in and put a towel over your head and the bowl and breathe deeply.

donotaskmesillyquestions · 11/06/2025 20:20

My consultant told me to use this while waiting for surgery (I had obstructed sinuses, and therefore recurring infections). Hope it helps you! It’s a kit for washing out the sinuses - pro tip, do it in the shower!!!

I would recommend making a drink out of hot milk and half a teaspoon of turmeric. It really helped me after covid

Wow. So much great advice. Thank you.

Have you tried a facial steam with menthol crystals? Really helps the pain. Not too hot and only 1-2 crystals. You can get them in a chemist. The box will last until you die.

BlueSkiesInJuly · 12/06/2025 21:29

Oh yes I use Neilmed every single morning as a preventative measure.

TheSpottedZebra · 12/06/2025 21:48

Another vote for the neilmed pot (use boiled water, and also make kaaaaa sounds as you do the rinse, helps the solution go to the right place), and for menthol crystal steaming.

Separately.

againstalloddsss · 12/06/2025 22:07

I second menthol crystals. Had the most painful sinusitis a couple of years ago. Was really struggling after 5 days and then someone told me about menthol crystals and they really helped.

bibbidybobbedyboop · 13/06/2025 06:46

Thanks. NeilMed on its way. When do you tend to do the steaming? I was thinking maybe once a day in the evening.
