dreading a horrible-sounding procedure involving the words 'cauterize' and 'cervix'

hello ladies,
has anyone ever had to have a cervical lesion cauterized? my gp is referring me for this and she mentioned the phrase 'local anesthetic'. in my book, that is not something that seems a viable option when a hot instrument is being put up my nether regions! please share your experiences so I know I'm not in for some medieval torture session...

Hi

I had mine done last month but had a general anaesthetic. developed a slight infection after but nothing serious and now i am fine again.

Was in and out of hospital in a day and just had mild cramps for about a week

So glad i had it done now though

sweetmonkey · 22/05/2008 15:14

BTW i was advised to have general as obv where it is you can tense up if awake and stuff and then they said if they couldn't do it during local then i would have to have general anyway.

DId they give you the option?

crazycanuck · 22/05/2008 15:26

she said some women had it done under a general when they were having other things done as well. I have yet to have the initial meeting with the gyno at the hospital so I think I will mention it then. I CANNOT imagine doing this under a local!

I had it done but don't remember having any anaesthetic! [well'ard emoticon]

I suppose in that case I must have had a local - it was certainly uncomfortable and I bled a bit afterwards. But quite bearable.

sweetmonkey · 22/05/2008 15:34

Hmm oh yeah i had a hystoscopy as well. They said it was for the cauterisation part though

huggymummy · 22/05/2008 15:44

Hi Crazy

Had same procedure but for a different reason - long long time ago.

Yes, they gave me a local and they often use a laser instrument. Wasn't pleasant but actually bearable.

If you want it done under general - push for it.

crazycanuck · 22/05/2008 18:41

on a side note, do you have to avoid hanky panky for awhile afterwards?

i had a loop treatment under local anaesthetic.

wasn't bad at all!

not really necessary to have a GA as you don't feel anything after the local goes in.

lulalullabye · 22/05/2008 18:48

If you can have a local it is a lot safer as there are lots of risks with a general anaesthetic.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 18:51

the local is safer and the recovery is wicked fast.

yes, you need to avoid sex for a bit afterwards.

crazycanuck · 22/05/2008 18:55

yeah, this would be my needle paranoia kicking in! I'll never forget the sight of the one they used before they stiched up my episiotemy...

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 18:57

they have to give you a needle for the canula for a general, anyway.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 18:57

and i've never had a GA where i didn't also have to have blood drawn as well.

don't have to do this with the local.
