God I've suffered constipation particularly when pregant and I'm weaning myself of lactulose.

I've heard colonic irrigation can help with lazy bowels and help retone your sytem.

Anyone any experience of this treatment and would you recommend?

I've had it a couple of times, and it was brilliant. As long as you're relaxed, it is quite nice, not in a pervy way, but the feeling of being 'unclogged'

It doesn't hurt, just feels a little uncomfortable as it goes in, but then you just lie on your side while the therapist massages your tummy and legs, to help things on their way.

Afterwards I used to feel so good, and ravenously hungry. My skin looked clearer too.

colonic irrigation without the pipe!

huggymummy · 22/05/2008 21:56

Time

Is it the kind of thing you need to use when not going to work the next day? It sounds terrifying! But I'm looking - Just want to do something that will rid me of this constant constipation. My diet is really good and I drink so much water and take excercise - I just don't get it.

I had a colonic in desperation, as my IBS was so bad.

Complete waste of money. I didn't feel any different and got no benefit from it at all.

If you have it done frequently it can also make a lazy bowel more lazy as it clears the bowel without the bowel actually having to do anything. A bit like overusing lactulose and laxatives.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/05/2008 22:02

I think colonic irrigation is only the solution, if the problem is, you have money to waste and want to damage your gut.

Seriously, if you want less constipation, there are some pretty straightforward, healthy, natural things you can do:

  • eat quite a bit of fibre
  • drink water
  • get some exercise

Job done.

Quite NQC!!!

Having been a nurse specialist in bowel surgery for many years I can't quite get the point??!

Mind you I could set up as a colonics specialist now!

beansmum · 22/05/2008 22:09

why did I think googling colonic irrigation would be a good idea?

ThingOne · 22/05/2008 22:32

Really bosybritches? As a patient with a stoma I have been told by my specialist nurse that irrigating my bowel is a perfectly safe way of managing it. It seems infinitely preferable to wearing a bag of poo for forty years.
