I went to see the gp several weeks ago with headaches, visual disturbances and unquenchable thirst. Had been going on a few weeks or more following a string of viruses. She sent me for bloods but didn’t think anything would come up. Bloods done this week, gp called within 24 hrs to send me to A&E. Creatinine had doubled in 6 months and GFR gone from >90 to 44

No idea what’s caused it - I don’t fit any of the likely reasons - no infection, no obstruction, don’t have diabetes, not overweight, don’t drink or smoke, eat fairly healthily, not too much meat.

What might this mean? I know I need to wait to find out for sure but I’m driving myself a bit nuts trying to figure out what the possibilities are.

it could be something or it could be nothing very much....renal numbers can go up and down wildly for all sorts of reasons (and can recover to normal from really quite impressive episodes of deterioration). You can't tell very much at all from those two numbers alone - you need history, examination, the rest of the bloods, urine studies, etc etc etc. Sounds like your GP's on it and taking it seriously...hope it turns out ok.

Thank you for your response. It’s very reassuring to know it may just be a recoverable blip. That’s the outcome I’ll try to concentrate on until any results suggest otherwise.

Glad your GP is taking it seriously. It could be acute and treatable but it needs to be investigated. Just make sure you are drinking plenty of water and avoid taking ibuprofen in the meantime. Hope it gets resolved.

Thank you. Hopefully they’ll get to the bottom of it. I’m off to the hospital again this morning for more bloods and hopefully some results. I’m dreading being passed back to the gp actually, the surgery is not coping with the current level of demand and care is pretty dismal.

Update: it has turned out to be IgA nephropathy. Hopefully manageable with medication. Good to have an answer and it´s all happened pretty swiftly.
