Colds/ tummy upsets

ThisLilacFox · 07/06/2025 20:43

12.5 month old gets an upset tummy (mucusy loose green stool and discomfort) with every cold. He had about 13 colds in the first year and gets a bad tummy for the duration of the illness. It has made starting solids very tricky (we are under paediatrics). Anybody else experience this and what age did your child’s tummy settle down?

My son was exactly the same and with any particularly nasty colds and fevers, he would vomit too, just as regularly as if he actually had a stomach bug. It was really upsetting for him and made everything that bit more difficult. He's 3 later this month and hasn't had this issue for about maybe 6 months now. I'm not sure, though, if it's just because the viruses aren't so bad during summer or if he's actually grown out of it now. The acid test will be a winter bug. The Dr did say that this kind of reaction was relatively common; some kids glandular system is just particularly sensitive. It's just their stomach glands are affected, just like they are in the neck, and unfortunately it triggers sickness. They should grow out of it in time.

I will keep my fingers crossed that your son has grown out of it. It is so hard. How did you manage with introducing solids? My son has suspected non-ige allergies, but it’s so hard to work out what is allergy and what is viral. We only have such short periods when he is virus free.

I feel your pain with the lack of downtime between viruses :( it does start to ease up when they hit 2+... and especially after 6 I've found with my eldest. To be honest, I've always approached weaning with quite an open mind with each of my 3 - as in, I've tried not to approach it worrying about allergies. I think I've been lucky though, only my youngest seems to have a mild egg allergy, perhaps if my others had allergies, I'd be more cautious.

my advice would be just to record what you're giving and any suspected reactions but try not to overthink it. If you start to notice a trend, then maybe do a bit of a trial with that specific food when your LO isn't poorly. Wishing you all the best xxx

Thank you so much for replying.
It’s just with the tummy upsets we are never sure if it is food related or viral. Sometimes he’s not seemed unwell, but has had bad mucusy diarrhea (no vomiting) that has lasted for 2 weeks.

How did you find sleep? Ours has been BAD!!! I think it’s mainly when his tummy flares he gets lots of trapped wind and doesn’t like to poop in his sleep. Lots of crying out in discomfort 😩 Did you have this too? X

I notice my son gets mucusy poo when he's teething and I mean borderline diarrhoea which my girls have never had. Have you been to the drs about potential allergies for your little one?

sleep was dreadful until he was 16 months and then it was like a switch and he's been fabulous ever since (with the exception when he's poorly).

all I'll say is that they all have their difficult quirks until suddenly you realised the quirk has changed or even stopped. By 2 and a half, with all of mine, I've found things seem to ease up completely on a lot of fronts xxx

Mine were like this. Dr said when it’s a chest infection sometimes the infected mucus can drip to the stomach or something like that(?) which is why. Of course don’t hold that against me as medical advice!

I have wondered about teething before, but I think it lasts too long to be that and it doesn’t seem to be related to teething tbh. I don’t mind if he has a loose stool it’s the writhing around during sleep/ tummy pain that it seems to cause that’s the issue.

Yes we are under the paediatric doctors, but there aren’t any tests for the type of allergy which affects the gut. The tests are for anaphylactic type reactions.

I guess I’m not like for answers just more for others with similar experiences and how they coped with it xx

How did you manage starting solids? We just seem to go from one virus to the next, so he is often struggling with diarrhea/ tummy pain 😞

We did BLW but didn’t wean when unwell as we didn’t want to upset DC but also because then wouldn’t be able to tell if DC had an intolerance/allergy or just virus symptoms. At that stage they’re getting all their nutrients mainly from breast milk/formula so no need to worry if they miss out on weaning xx

Did your baby not pick up many viruses?
Our baby is 12 and a half months and only has 10 things we know he can eat without getting a reaction. He has had 13 viruses between 5 months and now. It’s been a bit of a nightmare! Often he will only go a few days between viruses and it’s not long enough to introduce a new food.

Hi, I read your posts and we have extremely similar stories. I am struggling so much with virus/non ige related diarrhoea. So incredibly tough. How are you travelling?
