Hi QR I have an appointment at the breast clinic in a couple of hours, after finding a lump. I will let you know what happens there when I get back. The main thing is at the moment that you stay positive. xx

QR, you will have history taken (yourself and family) so mention previous history as you were saying earlier, a clinical examination and an ultrasound scan. It is unlikely they will do a mammogram as you are so young - especially with fibrous breasts as they will see very little.

They may take a small biopsy or a few cells (FNA) to confirm their findings (if they find anything). As others have said, lumps of "normal" breast tissue and fibroadenomas are very common and a biopsy just confirms the diagnosis and puts your mind at rest.

Good luck

cluelessnchaos · 23/05/2008 11:54

As you are young they will probably ultra sound your breast, as the breast tissue is denser. If they can see a lump then they will take some cells using a very small thin tube, not nearly as bad as it sounds.I have been twice, both times with breast mice and nothing to worry about. Third time I went they couldnt find a lump and it seemed to just be hormonal changes in my breast making them feel lumpy.

Hi queen, I am receiving treatment for BC at the moment and I can tell you that they could see my tumour on an ultrasound, so I hopefully if there is anything suspicious they will see it and order further tests. Painless and quick, so don't worry. Lots and lots of lumps turn out to be harmless.

BlaDeBla · 23/05/2008 15:53

All the people I have met to do with breast clinics have been fantastic apart from the woman who did my 1st biopsy, who should have been composted for her dreadful manner!

TimeForMe · 23/05/2008 19:21

Thank you WTS

Well I went to the clinic, supposedly one stop

Saw a nice lady doctor(?) who examined me. She then called the consultant who was also lovely and she examined me too. They found a bit of a firmer area at the top of my breast which seemed to concern them more than he actual lump. They arranged a mammogram, an ultrsound and a biopsy of the firm bit but I don't think they mentioned the lump

Had the mammogram which I must say was an experience! Then was told that there were no appointments available today (it was already almost 3pm by this time) so I will have to return on Tuesday for the ultrasound. I reported back to the breast clinic and caught the doctor just befrore she disappeared and she has arranged for me to return next Friday for the biopsy. She told me not to worry as she is sure it will turn out to be nothing. Easier said than done though isn't it. I was hoping to have it all sorted today.

Everyone at the breast clinic was lovely so it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Have got a bit of a sore chest though where the mammogram plates scraped me. I never realised my boobs could be squished and squashed so flat!

I hope it all goes ok for you QR. Try not to worry about things, I m sure you will be in good hands x

Only just seen this.

I feel very pleased and proud (even though I don't know you) that you went to your GP so quickly.

I went to a breast clinic a few years ago as the GP agreed with me there was a lump. I had an ultrasound and was given the all-clear immediately. I was pregnant at the time so very relieved.

Hope it goes well for you.

I feel the same WTS. I was dreading today but everyone was so nice. Also, I saw some very poorly ladies today, I wouldn't advise anyone to wait or to doubt themselves. It's best to go to the GP and be referred just to rule anything nasty out.

hi all....i'm feeling fine. In the past i probably would have put it to the back of my mind and hoped it would go away, but now i have ds i care much more about my wellbeing. I've been very lax about my smear being overdue, i'm actually more nervous about that than the breast clinic, simply because the last one i had hurt, because the gp didn't listen to me when i said i was 'small' down there and tried to use a speculum that was too big. Since then i've given birth and had an episiotomy (ok so it was nearly three years ago) so i'm still a bit sensitive emotionally about my nether regions. I am however more forthright than i used to be so the nurse will be told in no uncertain terms to be gentle with me

i love mumsnet.....always here when i need a bit of support.
Thankyou to those of you who have shared your experiences with me, i hope i can do the same for others in the future.

I've had loads of breast lumps all of which have turned out to be benign thankfully!

With me they did ultrasound followed by needle biopsy. Our breast clinic is very good in that they phone you with the results of th biopsy that afternoon!!!!

queenrollo · 28/05/2008 09:19

not heard yet but the letter will go to my ex's house.....because if i change my address at the surgery they will kick me off their books. I'm only 13 miles away but it is out of their catchment area. Ex is going to phone me when the letter arrives so i can go and collect it.

Off for my smear this morning, and also got a trip to the dentist this afternoon because the extraction i had done last week is still hurting quite a lot.

Going away with new dp and ds this weekend to a festival so i'm looking forward to getting there and having some FUN!!

Just found myself in the same boat!
I had an ovarian tumour removed about this time last year and was just thinking that at last life was getting back to normal, when I have found a lump in my breast this morning. I have just finished breast feeding my lo so hoping that it is something to do with that. I have my GP appointment on Friday but dreading it.

Hope things have gone well for you Queenrollo! Have you heard back yet??

queenrollo · 21/07/2008 14:25

thought i'd pop back into this thread......

my appointment was this morning, i had to change it from the one they sent me as i was on holiday then. I've been away this weekend and had to cut that short because this morning was the only time i could switch to.
I was examined, they agreed there was a lump, gave me an ultrasound and then decided to take a biopsy (cue me have a minor panic).....but it was fine, didn't hurt any where near as much as i thought it would ( i don't know if having very small breasts, and therefore lump was right near surface made a difference?)......i did bleed a lot afterwards and right now feel like i've been kicked by a donkey.
As she took the first bit of biopsy half the lump disappeared off the screen, so she took the rest and said in view of how easily/quickly it came out she thinks it is most likely a cyst.....they will phone me on Tuesday to let me know for sure.

how are you hawesmead?
