Anyone ever had hand, foot and mouth disease?

I got it last year, which baffled my doctor a bit because it's normally something kids get?

Anyway, I've got it again - just wondering if it's common to get it twice, and whether it's worth going to the doctors for what with me being pregnant? It's getting embarrassing how often I go to the doctors at the moment...

I wouldn't have thought you could have caught it twice!

It's easily spead, which is why children normally catch it, but then I would have presumed the body would build up immunity.

Probably worth going to the GP, if you are PG.

I got it when DD1 had it (about 10 years ago). GP said it was unusual because like you say you normally get it in childhood.

I am pretty sure you can't get it twice. I would go to Dr - could be a different virus.

My DS had blisters in his mouth last week but nowhere else so not hand, foot and mouth just a non-specific virus!

bohemianbint · 22/05/2008 10:56

Hmmm...maybe I should go back then. It's a nightmare though, usually end up waiting an hour (with DS climbing the walls) to be told there's nothing to be done about it. And I swear they must either think am the biggest hypochondriac ever, am literally in there every other week.

I think you can get it more than once because the disease can be caused by more than one virus. Would definitely go to gp as you are pg just in case.

I had it when DS had it (despite being told by both nursery and GP that adults 'hardly everget it'). Is your GP's surgery the sort you can phone up and ask if you need to come in or not? Because if you ring and say, I'm PG and have hand, foot and mouth they ought to be able to say that you need a prescription or that you will be OK with an aspirin, over the phone.

I had it last year, the kids didnt have it.
When i asked how i had got it, doc said i could picked it i up in the queue at Asda ?!
He told me it is the coxsackie A virus. Eurax cream helped with the itching. I wouldnt feel bad about going to the doctors, or maybe just give them a call and speak to your doctor, save the waiting room nightmare scenario.

DH had a viral rash last year that caused him to have blisters over his plams and fingertips.
he also had mouth ulcers.
Doctor straight away said stress related viral rash.
he has had it again since..
is it possible you didn't have hand foot and mouth?

There are different strains of the virus - aparrently there has been a rather nasty version in China not so long ago.

My kids had it last summer - imagine its not unlike a cold - you will get different varients especially if run down.

bohemianbint · 22/05/2008 18:52

Thanks for all the feedback - am definitely run down! Have had a cold, (still have no sense of taste/smell!) and a headache for nearly 2 weeks, and now this. This pregnancy has not been as easy as the last one, I feel like I'm just permanently ill.

Will try ringing the docs to see what they say. Thanks again!

Update - spoke to a friend of mine (who is also a GP) and apparently she had a similar thing when she was pregnant. Apparently it's not that common but is something to do with raised levels of hormones, so probably nothign to worry about!

Thanks for all the advice in the meantime.
