DS3 has an infected tooth (one that was actualy filled last year) - causing what seems like a lot of pain but in very short, infrequent bursts. He's been on antibiotics since Monday and tomorrow is having root canal work under a local anaesthetic. I have got my head round the fact they can't just pull the tooth because that will affect spacing and by the time the adult tooth comes through (when he's around 11 or 12) there will be no room for it.
The dentist says she has to try at least once before she can refer him to the special clinic place where he could have it done under a General. I'm scared silly by the prospect of a general - 2 of my older DCs have had them and were fine, but I found the whole thing terrifying. I'm also scared silly by the prospect of DS3 having the injection thing and then having to lie still with his mouth open for 20-30 minutes (time estimated by dentist). There's all that awful gag-reflex/wanting to swallow stuff, PLUS DS3 has Verbal Dyspraxia which affects the movement of his mouth/tongue and I don't know if that will make the whole experience worse.
Has anyone been through this with their DCs? SHould I try and insist on the General?
