Dd2 is always happy, never cry's and plays on her own without moaning. For the past week she has been very grumpy, wont settle, wont sleep and crys alot. This is'nt like her at all.

Dd2 is 2.2 and has possible autism, she does'nt talk or sign so i cant ask her what is wrong.

I'm realy worried as dd2 is a tough little thing and it takes alot to make her cry which makes me think she must be in some kind of pain.

What could it be?

If i take her to the GP how is he going to know whats wrong if she can't tell him?

hiya, couldn't pass your thread by. I am sure that there are a few checks the gp could do to rule out anything apparent to the trained eye?

I hope you get some better advice, hope your day goes ok.

poor dd, and you x

Thanks piratecat,

She's playing now. One minute she's playing the next she is crying

I keep thinking 'oh she seems ok now, maybe i wont phone the doctor' and then she starts crying again

At that age, if dd1 behaved like that (ASD) she was coming down with an ear infection.

She was expectly the same - couldn't tell me if something was wrong, just got grumpy and whiney, and usually went off food (a sure sign where dd1 is concerned).

It sometimes took ages for the infectoi to come out - dd1 could be under the weather for a bit, perk up, then back down again a couple of times before the infectio hit.

I hope things become clearer for you and your dd

*exactly the same

I thought maybe an ear infection, she does have problems with her ears (holds them alot) but as she holds the all the time anyway its hard to tell if thats whats hurting.

So maybe its best to take her to the doctors?

i second the ear infection theory.

there can sometimes be a small blockage that comes and goes, causing intermittant pain.

or could be a water infection or something...this is usually indicated by a really high temp...

the gp will check i'm sure, her temp, her chest, her throat and her ears....and hopefully these will give you some pointers.

hope shes better soon.

silverfrog · 22/05/2008 08:40

if you think she will let the gp look at her ears, then def take her. (dd1 had such pian that she still won't let me even move her hair form over her ears - nearly a year since last infection now!)

gp will do a general eat/throat/temp check as well, which can be reassuring.

If she is prone to giving you signs re ears I'd def think that was an issue. The other way I used to tell with dd1 was she would start drinking loads (she normally has an issue with drinking).

Other than usual keeping fluids up, decent food intake if poss, and generally keeping as happy as poss (dd1 would like to sit on me. All day. Just sitting and cuddling - nice but impractical!) then if there is no other signs pst gp, this might be all you can do...

Sympathy, it is miserable when you don't know what to do to make it better.

She had an ear infection a few months ago, i have spoken to the health visiter and gp about her ears as she always holds them but they just fob me off telling me she could be teathing etc. She has been holding them for the past year

ears..or could it be her 2nd molars coming through..> they come in between 2 and 2.5 usually, and hurt!!

silverfrog · 22/05/2008 08:58

if she is prone to ear infections, and is constantly holding ears etc, I'd push for further investigation - don't be fobbed off!

I wanted further investigation done ofr dd1 when she was similar age (repeated infections - poss glue ear? bid language dely, etc so wanted to rule out ear problmes). She has only just had tests to give her all-clear from this, and she is now 3.8!

Definitley keep badgering about your concerns re ears. I'd go to gp, get it on record that you're concerned (again!) and ask for further investigation.

If your dd has a lnguage issue, the first thing they should be checking is hearing etc (and not just distraction tests) - they are normally quite keen to go down this route ime, as this checking is cheaper (and the problem more fixable) than ASD stuff.

Sorry for typing - wriggly baby!

HereComeTheGirls · 22/05/2008 09:07

Must add I don't mean she holds her ears because she has been getting her teeth for a year

But this latest episode COULD be teeth...its the right time...

I agree you should have her investigated for glue ear!!

Was a bit abrupt before...DD getting into everything!!

Just got back from doctors,

He checked her ears, throat, teeth and tummy and found nothing.

He was very concerned as dd2 did'nt react to being poked around, he said this was'nt normal behaviour for a 2 year old as she did'nt make a fuss or cry. He wants to have her hearing tested and get her refered to a peadiatrition (sp). I told his i was worried that she may have autism as dd1 has AS.

Now i am upset that dd2 may have to go through the same as dd1 is going through now. I knind of thought she may have something wrong but to be told by a GP has realy upset/shocked me.

I'm sorry it wasn't good news.

But it is good that she has got a referral to be checked out properly, and that the GP listened to you!
