DH and haemorrhoids - what should he do next?

DH has been to see the GP because he has a pile (or two?!) which has been bleeding. GP took all this very seriously, and sent DH off for all manner of tests, including a colonoscopy. During which polyps were found/removed. No sign of anything cancerous, thankfully - but nothing actually done about the original complaint!

DH has had a couple of episodes recently of bleeding, which has been quite embarrassing for him. (Cue me, and other female relatives making wisecracks about ‘now you know what it’s like to be a woman’, etc Grin). We were away recently, though, and it was more than embarrassing for him, as he bled on his shorts, which meant we had to find a way of cleaning those, as he had nothing else to wear.

Fast forward to today. Watching the sport - he wonders if it was about it impacting his blood pressure? - and he had a fairly massive bleed. To start with, he thought it was just sweaty, as it has been hot today. But no. Quite a large bleed.

My reaction - you must go back to the GP. His reaction? They can’t do anything. I should say that for the last couple of weeks he’s being using Anusol suppositories.

Is it true that they can’t do anything? I’m sure there must be something that can be done.

BTW I should add that I have namechanged to make this post (although this is a username I’ve used before), as DH is very sensitive about someone being able to identify him.

I had a large bleeding pile and I went to a&e because it wouldn't stop bleeding. I saw the surgical assessment team to see if it needed operating on and the lovely Dr it some numbing cream on it and popped it back in. Then it completely went, he said that being out of the body makes it really hard to heal. It really needs to be seen asap as I'd have thought infection risk is high.

Thank you. That’s my feeling too. I can’t believe that there is nothing that can’t be done, never mind dealing with the bleeding.

Did they not do anything in the colonoscopy? They injected mine with something that stopped all the bleeding. I would see if he can’t get referred back to the surgeon as they can do other things. If he’s bleeding so much it’s appearing on his shorts, that’s a lot and should be taken seriously.

I would go back to GP and push on how it’s impacting his life. There are management options like banding that could help.

MovingBird123 · 01/06/2025 09:47

He needs to go back. GP appointments can be so hit and miss...

QueenPB · 01/06/2025 22:28

So stupid that they didn’t treat the piles during the colonoscopy! Ask gp for referral to colorectal team who will be able to remove them. And to all of those blaming this on the gp you are being very unfair.

CathyTwat · 02/06/2025 07:47

Well yes, quite - you’d have thought that they would have done something at the time of his appointment.

Thanks for the replies. I really have to get him to go to the GP.
