Is this a tick bite?

So I had a small insect bite come up on my leg 2-3 weeks ago that was initially a small red bump, didn't think anything of it and didn't see what bit me. I had been walking in the woods after it appeared. But over the last week or so it has gone flat and turned into a bullseye. Still fairly small about 2cm wide but a fair bit bigger than the original bite. Does this sound like a tick bite? Do I need to see a Doctor about it?

Yes it looks a bit like a tick bite to me - although you'd normally have had to physically remove the tick itself, as they attach themselves to you so it's surprising you didn't notice it at the time.

There is a risk of Lyme disease from an infected tick bite so I suggest you call 111 to see what they advise
Lyme disease - NHS

It does look like a tick bite. You didn’t see a tick? I would go to the doctor and tell them that you had been walking in the woods.

although you say you walked in the woods after it appeared. Where were you waking before it appeared

I had something very similar recently. Started off as a blood blister (didn't see a tick), then 2 weeks later a very itchy rash in a ring about 5cm across. I did an online consult and uploaded photos of the progression. Doctor immediately prescribed antibiotics as they couldn't rule out a tick bite. I have to take them for 21 days!

I'd get it checked out.
I got a tick bite when hanging the washing out on the line in my own garden (and the grass was short).

Looks like it.
I’d contact your GP for antibiotics - Lymes disease is not to be trivialised. Unlikely your tick was carrying it, but don’t take any chances.

Sorry I meant to say I noticed the bite after I had been walking in the woods. I will get in contact with my GP to be on the safe side then. It will have to wait until Tues now though

Also, draw round it with a pen so you can see if its getting bigger/smaller.

Yes you need tick protocol antibiotics. Three weeks of Doxycycline.
The tick most likely to pass on Lyme’s is the nymph stage and they are the size of this full stop .

So incredibly easy to miss. Some areas have higher levels of Lyme’s than others but you can’t take a risk with it, it’s a horrible disease. Dd was treated last year for a similar looking bite.

Is it ok to wait until after the weekend or do I need to get it checked sooner?

Lyme Disease is no picnic. I would start with 111, they should be able to get you an OOO GP appointment or even a prescription; if not they will advise. Or if you have a minor injuries you can pop there this morning. Or A&E.

Yes, start with 101. It’s only a matter of being prescribed AB’s so hopefully they will hand them over without too much fuss!

The sooner you are seen the better your outcome.

yes it’s a tick bite

Lowdown123 · 24/05/2025 10:25

Ok thanks everyone, I have done 111 online and am waiting for a call back from a nurse to advise further
