If you have had or know an adult who has had whooping cough, what were the symptoms please?

I strongly suspect I had whooping cough last night year - about exactly a year ago actually
It started with feeling like I had a bad cold bug, tired, aches, etc then developed into a cough which would not shift. I had frequent bursts of coughing where it felt like I was going to pass out. After about a month of this I developed really sore ribs and stomach muscles, as a result of the continual coughing. It was pretty grim.
It did eventually clear but took about three months, so I felt pretty bad most of last summer (May to August)
what I would say is if you suspect whooping cough go to the doctors now for antibiotics - apparently they are only useful in the first three weeks. By they time I realised it might be whooping cough I was way past that.

That sounds awful. 3 months is so long! I did go to the docs yesterday and have been given doxycycline. Was your cough a productive one, or completely dry? I've never had such an awful violent cough as this. I've also had a low grade fever for over a week now. Did a covid and flu tests and both negative. Also, did you have a fever or sore throat with your whooping cough? Sorry for all the questions

DH and I both had it last year, April.

He came down with it first, bit fluey, nothing major but the actual cough was awful. He said at its worst it would wake him struggling to breathe and almost felt like he was drowning - he's the last person I know to overplay any illness.

Mine started without any warning really, felt ok, just started with the cough and phoned gp immediately for a phone appointment and had an attack of coughing whilst speaking with her. Antibiotics were prescribed for me but after taking a couple I felt dizzy and nauseous so was advised to stop.

It took both of us around 3 months to shake off. I received a phone call from Public Health England to do a check on who lived with us, was I working with any vulnerable people etc.

Awful dry cough where I couldn’t breathe properly. Lasted months too. I think it’s known as 100 day cough. I went through phases of being ok then getting worse again. Had to stand in shower to ease the coughing

It seems from what you've said and other info that whooping cough would not be coughing up green mucus then. Maybe I've got bronchitis then. Whatever it is I wish it would do one now! Can't imagine 3 months of this so whooping cough does sound horrendous

I think mucus means infection so def get that looked at again - your body is trying to clear the problem so that’s good

PawsAndTails · 23/05/2025 08:29

DH did. He wasn't sick but they call it the 100 day cough for a reason. Just a terrible nagging cough for ages.

I had it this time last year and it was like no cough that I’ve ever had before - I’ve had very violent coughs with flu and Covid before but the whooping cough cough felt different and felt like it came from a different place if that makes sense? I was heaving and vomiting a lot with it and the cough would make my diaphragm go into spasm for a good 20 minutes at least - that’s when some people get the ‘whoop’ but only had the whoop a few times, usually it was spasming diaphragm, coughing until I threw up or passed out, and retching attacks that would last 20 minutes or more. It started with a mild cold and cough for a week then went nuclear and lasted over 3 months. I coughed up lots of thin, clear mucus which is characteristic of it. Thick green mucus isn’t likely to be WC.

As the previous poster, but mine lasted 5 months. I thought I was never going to get over it.
The coughing fits made me vomit, wet myself ( usually I'm OK!) and be gasping for air, as inhaling was nigh on impossible in a coughing fit. And for the first couple of weeks I felt very feverish. I also had episodes where my temperature fell as low as 34.5 °, which was interesting.
