Swollen calf - Not a DVT

DS1 is 19. 4 weeks ago he complained of leg pain. Very unusual for him, painkillers didn't help. Took to the GP who examined and measured his calves. The bad one was swollen by 3cms. Was given a letter to attend A&E re possible DVT. GP also completed an ultrasound request.
Blood test at hospital confirmed not a DVT. Doctor who examined said it was probably just cramp, and to go back to the GP if persisted.
The ultrasound scan appointment came through, confirmed no clots.
Leg still swollen, I've booked the first available routine appointment at the GP which is the 30th. Leg remains the same, painful, but can walk etc. still appears visually the same amount of swollen. No worsening

I know no one can tell us what it is, but I'm wondering what should the next steps be? Would it be unreasonable to expect an MRI? Can cramp last this long?

Any insights/advice would be welcomed

I’ve had two dvts, one of which moved to my lungs causing a pulmonary embolism. I would be asking for an ultrasound on that calf. Is it possible that the blood test could have missed a dvt. My calf was also 3cm bigger than the other one. Don’t be fobbed off, it can be life threatening if not treated.

Thanks, he's had an ultrasound and they confirmed at the appointment no clots.

That’s good news hopefully it will give you some reassurance. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon.
