Has anyone been able to get treated for non-facial acne on the NHS?

Hello. My BF has a large area of acne on his back. For a while it was controllable with OTC creams (acnecide) but since a few months ago, the creams have not been working. The acne is now on his bum cheeks as well as his back. He has been in touch with his GP about treatments for it. Our local GP only does telephone appointments now, unless they think you absolutely need to be in seen in person. He got a text back from the GP practice asking him to send in photos of the acne. It would have been very awkward for him to do it himself, so I took the photos for him.

After sending them in, he was told they aren't prescribing anything on the NHS for non-facial acne because it's classed as cosmetic treatment. I'm not sure if this is just local policy or a national thing. It costs around £150 to go private for a consultation and that's before the cost of any private prescriptions. I am curious if anyone on MN has been able to get treatment on the NHS for non-facial acne, or indeed any other skin conditions affecting non-facial areas.

This is not the answer you were looking for, but if the doctor has refused treatment, you can either doctor shop or sort it yourself.
Prevention is better than cure. Acne is mostly caused by hormones being out of whack and this can be sorted out via diet. Take a look at the ketogenic diet, for a short introduction look at Dr Ken Berry on skin conditions.

Can I recommend this? If it doesn’t work, it’s only £6 and it’s soap so use it up!
lather it up on a soft back brush last thing before he gets out the shower and let it sit for a few mins before he rinses off
it got rid of my back acne when even prescribed stuff didn’t work

It's really a hassle to go with our NHS. I have acne and treated with a routine. So here goes my routine if you would be interested:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
LRP spf on my face
Cicaplast
Evening:
LRP moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
