Ds2 has 'nonspecific viral rash'

Went to GP this morning, ds2 has 'nonspecific viral rash' all over his face, arms, neck, a little bit on his tummy and back. The GP was very keen to check he'd had his MMR - which he has - and she said 'because he'd had that, it was non-specific viral rash.'. Which got me thinking - does that mean she wondered if it was something different (ie measles?) or is it just a check they have to do? Because I thought that the vaccs weren't 100%.

What other symptoms does he have? If its just a rash withno fever/itching etc then the common diagnosis is "nonspecific viral rash" - which I always take to mean "I don't know what it is - its a rash"

Tortoise - dd had this from Sun to Fri last week, also 'non-specific viral rash', but we weren't asked if she'd had her MMR. Although that may have been because she's only just one.

my friends ds has exactly the same and it is a viral rash seems to be alot about at the moment

guess they were asking just to check before saying its virus as any rash needs to be checked and if had jab very unlikely anything else with no other symptoms

hope he feels better soon

DD has had "rash" a couple of times. Once she was covered from top to tow in a bright red raised rash - no itching, no temp nothing else. Rash went as quickly as it arrived - still have no idea what caused it.

He had high temperature over the weekend - going up and down, and has had a bit of a cold with runny eyes, but he often gets runny eyes/conjunctivitis as he has blocked tear ducts which I'm hoping he'll grow out of! He's not too unhappy, and the GP said to take him back if he got worse or didn't get better. But I'm one of these people who likes to 'know' what they've got!

He's a bit better this evening, so am guessing probably isn't measles....

Maybe you'd prefer if GP's took blood off every child with a rash, Kerrymum, to identifiy exactly what virus has caused it? Saying that a child has a non-specific rash is hardly the same as knowing jack ....

Blandmum · 20/05/2008 21:04

and given the vast number of viruses that exist, if it is 'just' a simple virus that comes and goes, what benefit is there of having a name, for the vast majority of cases?

It isn't as if there are specific antivirals in the same way that there are specific antibiotics to use with known sensitive bateria

lol at this thread getting a

Amazingly, ds2 is the first of my 3 to get this sort of rash - ds1 had what I was absolutely CONVINCED was slapped cheek, although GP put it down to 'n-s-v', but I'm sure it was slapped cheek as it was spot on for symptoms, and was going round his playgroup, but this is a really angry rash!

If it doesn't clear up I will take him back - it really does look like a measles rash, but he isn't too unhappy. Am keeping him away from other children just in case though.
