DD (6 months) has got a temperature, do I need to take her to the doctor? How should I look after her?

light clothing, regular doses of the paracetamol (according to the instructions), if she gets very hot a warmish bath helps. As long as she's alert she's fine.

Kewcumber · 20/05/2008 10:24

"As long as she's alert she's fine." - obviously that not a medical opinion! But its what my GP told me first time I took DS with a very high fever.

PuppyDogTails · 20/05/2008 10:25

I would offer cold boiled water too.

andiem · 20/05/2008 10:25

I would just keep an eye on her temp use nurofen instead of paracetamol as it is more effective and make sure she gets lots of feeds. If she is happy then no need to take her to the doctor as it is probably viral. If her temp goes really high above 40 or she gets a rash or anyhting then I would consider dr.

Sorry, yes andiem re water

PuppyDogTails · 20/05/2008 10:29

Aha, the dreaded nursery lurgy - we are suffering from it here too. DS has had a streaming nose and bad cough ever since he started a month ago.

andiem · 20/05/2008 10:32

no water da just bf they are what she needs

Kewcumber · 20/05/2008 10:32

can you use nurofen on 6 month old? If you can you can alternate nurofen and paracetamol up to the maximum safe dosage of each. That can really help bring temp down.

Look at it this way - she's building a healthy immune system

andiem · 20/05/2008 10:33

yes you can kew but in fact the official advice is now to use one or the other not both
I would by choice use nurofen it reduces the temp more and lasts longer

would only use both in very severe cases

belgo · 20/05/2008 10:34

I would just give her breast milk. If she's comfortable with just baby paracetamol, I see no need to giver her anything else.

38.5°C isn't that high, and if she's alert and reasonably happy, then I wouldn't do anything else.

Just keep an eye on her and if she gets worse, then contact your GP.

I only alternate if temp is very high (surpringly on GP's advice!)

DA- so did you catch 5ths disease? I also have no immunity to CMV, and now am pregnant with my third child,so I'm always nervous that I'm going to catch it.

Pop over to Belgium.

But I don't think you really need it for a temperature of 38;5.

yes I remember the pfb feeling. And it doesn't get much better then more babies you have!

belgo · 20/05/2008 11:24

It's strange though how the rules are different in differnet countries. I have a friend who moved to Germany from Belgium and she asked me to send some medication through the post to her for her dd, as that was easier then gettting a prescription from her GP.

No gas and air here either, but epidural rate is very high as there are loads of aneasthetists.
