If one of your DC has had slapped cheek could you come over here and have a gander at these pics and tell me what you think?

GP thinks it might be post viral rash, based on the fact that DS had an ear infection a week ago. But he only saw the rash when it was a tiny bit on his neck and back.

He is now covered in it, very miserable and grumpy and itchy. DD also has suspicious looking red cheeks, so what do you reckon?

Not sure. When my DS had it his cheeks were bright red - like he had been out on a really cold day or, indeed, been slapped. He didn't have anything on his body and he wasn't at all itchy.

As far as I know, with slapped cheek, the fever & general unwellness happens a couple of weeks before the cheeks emerge, at which point, they're fine.

Only my experience though. Doctor won't do anything for slapped cheek but if you are worried, go back.

It might just be a viral rash when she had slap cheek she had scalded looking cheeks which were bumpy iukwim and also a bumpy rash on her torso but it wasnt as red as her face. I would keep on eye on him for a few hrs and go back to docs if it gets worse

WrongSideOfTwenty · 20/05/2008 09:30

I think the cheeks tend to be very bright red with slapped cheek. It could be viral but my daughter had a rash which we first thought was just viral and it turned out to be Scarlet Fever. See the doc if you are worried.

does it fade if you stretch the skin, or do the glass test? If not, take him to A&E to get checked out.

DumbledoresGirl · 20/05/2008 09:34

From your pics, it does not look like slapped cheek to me. 2 of my children have had it and it was a rash on the cheeks, very pronounced, like you might see on a child who has been running around outside on a frosty day. You know, apple cheeks.

My children have also had non identified rashes and they looked more like what I can see in the picture.

misdee · 20/05/2008 09:36

have added a pic to my profile of dd2 when she had slapped cheek. the rash then progressed very brightly down her shoulders and arms.

sherby · 20/05/2008 09:38

No his cheeks aren't red like that at all. Must be post viral then, poor little sod

I dont think this is slapped cheek. The rash on the face doesnt look prominant enough, and with slapped cheek they are ill before the rash appears, not once they have it.

Psychomum5 · 20/05/2008 09:40

when my DD3 had slapped cheek she was very red rashy on her face!

like a severe allergic reaction in fact, which is what I thought it was to start with, then when piriton didn;t do anything, we went to the hosptial and they said there what it was!

DarrellRivers · 20/05/2008 09:51

No not slapped cheek , not red enough

loopylou6 · 20/05/2008 12:04

Agree, doesnt look like slapped cheek at all, id go with viral rash
