Tennis Elbow - finally something that worked

Hi all just posting this as helpful advice really....

So I have been suffering from tennis elbow in both arms for about a year, I suspect by overtraining at the gym (bit of a gym bunny). Anyway I've been back and forth with the NHS physio for months with no improvement, just kept being given various wrist stretching exercises etc, kinda fobbed off.

After digging around on the internet for a few days a couple of weeks ago stumbled across a video of an old guy (ex physio) who basically said the main issue that is overlooked (that he still cannot believe) is that its not ness the small tendon in the elbow causing the pain, but the larger tendons and muscle running down the top of the forearm as this has become knotted. He showed a simple thing to do that was to get some moisturiser or lotion and basically put it on the upper top of the forearm and use your fingers to rub back and forth across the larger tendon (not up and down) and it will feel like a bit of rope. You need to do this quite firmly and for about 3-4mins and every day until it starts to feel less rigid like a rope and becomes more flexible.

So I've been doing this for 2 weeks and my tennis elbow is pretty much fixed!!!

There you go!!!

Thank you. I’ll give that a try. I’ve nearly always got tennis elbow in one or other elbow (or both 😭)

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 16/05/2025 16:15

Acupuncture cleared it up for DH!

PowerthruIT · 16/05/2025 16:19

Yes I felt that all the exercises the physio provided were aggravating it more!

Interesting about the acupuncture

Can't seem to find the exact one I saw (I was digging around the net for a few days) but this one is pretty much the same

Thank you for sharing it! My husband has had tennis elbow for what seems like years, he’s going to try this now 😊

DH had physio. It didn’t work. They suggested acupuncture. He was very sceptical about it. The first 5 sessions, he didn’t feel any improvement. The 6th session, they really turned the needles round. Afterwards, the tennis elbow was gone! He doesn’t push it now - it was too much rowing at the gym, that brought it on.

If it's both arms, the problem is likely to be your neck.

I've had tennis elbow for 5 years now on and off. I found the same thing on Youtube and it definitely helped.

However the best thing was seeing a physio who did some frankly awful thing to my neck - instant relief.

If I feel it coming back now I do my neck exercises and it's better straight away.

Stretching and acupuncture (from a proper acupuncturist not a physio who's done a weekend course!) sorted my Mum's out after 3 sessions and she had been struggling for years.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 19/05/2025 08:27

I’m glad this worked for you OP. I have tennis elbow in both and have found pressure bands work well for me when it is really painful.

WhiteWidowWithAttitude · 19/05/2025 08:39

This is very good to know. I had a cortisone injection into mine which did fuck all, and no physio touched it either. It has for some reason eased massively by itself just now, but it was torturous for a while and I’ll keep this bookmarked in case it ever gets bad again! Thank you ☺️

I found acupuncture, from a Physio in fact, worked instantly

That is really interesting as I do have a slightly bulged disc in my neck at the C5/C6 section. I originally had pain from the shoulder all down the arm and had a nerve block injection2 years ago that fixed it but I wonder if the disc is pinching a nerve again that caused the tennis elbow to come on suddenly in both my arms! The massaging seems to be working but would be keen for you to share you neck excersises to see if they also help.
