Today has to be one of the worst days ever. I came home from work, and the front door was open and the TV on, but I couldn't find DH. I phoned round a few mates who sometimes take him out for the day, and thankfully they came round. I found dh collapsed in the bathroom.

I thought he was dead.

Thankfully he wasn't, but it too a 999 call and the paramedics to find out that he was in a diabetic coma.

It was all so awful, it has been the thing that I've worried about most of all in his illness, coming home and finding him dead and I really thought that it had happened.

Amazingly the docs still think that he is well enough to chemo tomorrow and will arrange for us to have oxygen at home, and his o2 sats are poor, probably due to the tumous mass.

christ but this is hard. Thank god I had people with me when it happened, and MIL is visiting. If I had stayed in work for a meeting that I was supposed to go to, I think that he really could have died.

oh MB - how appalling
very glad he is still with you

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 19/05/2008 20:54

How are you doing now?

Was he diabetic before or is this a recent development?

It is at least reassuring to know that the hospital are confident it'll be under control and he's fit for chemo duty tomorrow.

Sorry to read this MB, it sounds too scary. I hope you're both ok xxx

Anchovy · 19/05/2008 21:00

Can you separate the diabetic thing out in your own mind? My mum, dad and grandmother are diabetic and I know a fair bit about diabetic comas. They are scary - but they also are dealable with and treatable. If Mr B can remember the symptoms - you almost have to "learn" what it feels like when it is coming - he is on the road to dealing with them.

I think what I'm trying to say is that if this is the diabetes, best to concentrate on the diabetes, rather than see it as a sign or symbol of his overall condition.

Best wishes.

Blandmum · 19/05/2008 21:01

Hes been diabetic for a bit over a year, but the diabetes is because of the pancreatic cancer.

Stupidly I thought that he had collapsed because of his recent breathing problems, and I didn't think about the diabetes.

I think that he slept through the early warning signs because he was over tired because he isn't sleeping well ( due to being out of breath and the panicy feeling this gives )

he's had a hypo before, but recognises the symptoms and takes some glucose. the worrying thing is that he slept through the early signs and was straight into coma
