Contraception that doesn't involve hormones or condoms?

TattooedGrrrl · 19/05/2008 12:31

Having spent most of the last 3yrs either pregnant / breastfeeding, and having had the contraceptive jab (which has made me hungry and bad tempered) i don't want to go on the pill, or have the jab again.(i'd like to feel what 'normal' is again, ie not full of hormones!). I also hate condoms.

DH isn't getting the snip until September, so what other options are there?

Diaphragm (also called the cap), sponge, some coils, or abstinence.

ib · 19/05/2008 12:34

You can have the copper coil...not sure it's worth it for such a short time though.

You could also use a diaphragm (do they still do them on the NHS?)

wonderstuff · 19/05/2008 12:35

I have this dilema too, my GP recommended copper coil, I'm a bit scared about it, but it does sound good.

TattooedGrrrl · 19/05/2008 12:40

what does the coil involve? how long does it last?

although he's having the snip in Sept, it won't have immediate effect because he'll have to get tested after to check it's def worked.

I have a copper coil and its great for ease, you can keep it in for eight years or so.

TattooedGrrrl · 19/05/2008 12:46

just looked the coil up- lasts years apparently, and still involves hormones

Not all coils involve hormones

If you get a straightforward copper coil there are no hormones and as soon as your dh gets the all clear you can remove it with no lasting side effects

MrsTittleMouse · 19/05/2008 12:51

I had a diaphragm and really like it. I don't think that it's great if you're super-fertile though, as it's not as reliable as the pill.

TREBUCHET · 19/05/2008 12:51

Honey apparently works very well, especially when allowed to soak into a sponge.

I feel the same, between pg's I tried to get a cap (not saucer like diaphragm, but little cervical cap) and there's not one in the country apparantly! Had gp, hospital and clinic all searching to no avail. Seems mad!

TattooedGrrrl · 19/05/2008 12:54

i'll make an appointment to discuss non-hormonal coil then.

don't think diaphragm would be wise- DH and i appear super fertile; we conceived DS2 the same week i stopped breastfeeding DS1 and we decided to try for him.

ERm, have you considered everything-but-penetration sex?

TattooedGrrrl · 19/05/2008 12:56

madamez- we not even doing anything right now, but we def don't want anymore kids, and it'll be just our luck we'd get carried away when we do get back in the swing of things, and i'd end up pg.

I've had a plain copper coil fitted, as I was also v unhappy at thought of hormones.

Clinic v good, but they did warn me that, due to heavier periods, a lot of women come back and opt for the Mirena coil.

haven't noticed any difference in my periods

Cosette · 19/05/2008 14:00

I got pregnant with DD2 whilst using a diaphragm. She IS wonderful though...

Gledhill · 19/05/2008 14:05

Persona is great - just pee on sticks and it tells you when you can / can't have safe sex

TinkerbellesMum · 19/05/2008 15:23

TattooedGrrrl I'm having similar problems

Can't have hormones because of being autoimmune.
Barrier isn't the best method in a relationship
Won't use abortifacient contraception.

My consultant did say the jab is safe, but not sure if I want the side effects.

You sound as fertile as us. First pregnancy was on the pill, second was the first cycle after my m/c, third was second cycle, because we'd watched the calendar. We were so confident that we had a conversation before we did anything about what day it was and were we happy to go ahead. His first baby was his exes first time (I'm told) and they were using a condom (again what I'm told).

BlaDeBla · 19/05/2008 19:02

I've got my 2nd bog standard copper coil and although it takes a bit of getting used to, it's great - nothing to think about, no hormones, and it's there for years!
