Coldsore - dry out or use cream?!

Ive got a hideous coldsore overtaking my lip. I've started on the Acyclovir tablets, taking 2 x 1000mg Lysine each day and also using Herstat propolis ointment/cream but upon reading, some people have said to use tea tree oil to dry it out and leave off with the cream.
It's currently wet due to the Herstat, and I'm unsure whether to continue or not.
It's too big to use any patches.
I just want it gone 🤦🏼‍♀️

If you can take the pain, cut a clove of garlic in half and apply. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds and repeat maybe 3 time in an hour. It works, but it hurts.
You can also do this at the first tingle.

Also for fun, google the cold sore virus, where it lives and it's life cycle.

I also have a huge coldsore and have suffered for years. Like the poster above, I apply pressure but don't use garlic, I use ice, as often as possible for as long as possible. Takes the burning away. Will also try using garlic

Use lysine it’s available on Amazon etc it’s fantastic

So I put the cream on and once the blisters go I stop using it at it keeps everything to wet. I found the story it is, the quicker it heals.

Blood horrid aren't they

I experimented a bit with my current cold sore with wet and dry (hadn’t had one for ages as I take aciclovir prophylactically every day). I used a hydrocolloid plaster on it to keep it wet at the start of the cold sore and then stopped using the plasters after day 3/4 as I went back to work and didn’t want a plaster hanging off my lip! I would conclude it’s better to keep it dry as the scab has to form. Once it dried out it got smaller fairly quickly.

pjsandplants · 08/05/2025 20:21

The plasters are good. Keeps it clean and makes it less noticeable. If you put one on straight away, it will stop it blistering.

I prefer to try to dry mine out. So dab regularly with neat tea tree oil. Stings a bit but has a nice medicinal smell to it.
I used to use the creams but didn’t like the feeling of it being wet.

TheCheeseTax · 08/05/2025 21:33

Buy aciclovir from an online pharmacy (it's a scrip) and use that when you feel it coming and during an attack.

Hopealong · 08/05/2025 21:39

I use tea tree at the start and often it stops them fully developing so it definitely works. Once you have a full blown one I tend to think you have to try and dry them out. Once they have dried and are on the retreat I use Savlon or the like to heal the skin.

If it's any consolation I'm now in my late fities and hardly suffer at all, one every few years. So think you can grow out of them.

Hope yours clears up quickly, they really make you feel crap.

MamaorBruh · 08/05/2025 23:42

Thanks all

Ive been using the acyclovir and Lysine tables for over 24hrs now.
There is one big blister on my lip then lots of tiny blisters going up towards my nose, it's gross!
I've cleaned around and put fresh propolis ointment on it and will see how it goes in the morning.
The tiny blisters are tingling and I don't know if that's because they are starting to heal or because there is more looming 😫

P.s - yes they are bloody horrid aren't they! People say "stop moaning it's just a coldsore," but my whole body tends to feel so crap when one appears, and I feel just yucky and drained. Sounds dramatic I know!

Vaseline. Nothing else. No scabs coming off and starting the whole thing again. It'll heal by itself using Vaseline.. I did it just last week. Took a couple of days.

MissTFied · 09/05/2025 00:31

Sudocrem gets rid of cold sores in no time

AuntieDolly · 09/05/2025 00:37

I’ve started using Vaseline on mine too. Absolutely no touching with your finger, but slather with Vaseline using a cotton bud. This way it doesn’t scab and keep cracking and flaking. Seem to clear up much quicker
