Hi
Just as the title says really.
DS has just turned 13 and got train track braces fitted yesterday.
I've never had braces so didn't really know what to expect. I suppose I thought it would be a bit uncomfortable but fine.
It was sore yesterday, last night he couldn't sleep and needed extra paracetamol in the night. This morning he was feeling too sick to eat, he's managed a few spoonfuls of tomato soup for breakfast. He's just been sick and had had some loose bowel movements (sorry tmi!).
Is this normal?
I'm also feeling like an idiot because today is the day he's meant to change classes (his first year at high school has been bad for bullying and he's moving to get away from the bullies) and I just thought he'd be fine to go in. Also he has a special week of activities next week. Please tell me he'll be fine for that?! He's had such a hard year and he needs anything good and anything that helps him bond with the friends he had and hopefully make new ones.
But the being sick and diarrhoea, is that normal? An effect of not eating enough and having calpol??

Doesn't sound normal to me with my kids and my own experience of having braces. It could just be coincidence and he's got a bug. Or like you say, painkillers on an empty stomach.

WitchesofPainswick · 07/05/2025 09:43

Calpol is weird stuff - can he just have paracetamol?

Could be a bug and just a coincidence. Is it worth ringing the dentist to ask for advice?

babystarsandmoon · 07/05/2025 09:45

I think it’s an unfortunate coincidence that it’s happened at the same time at he’s had his braces fitted. It won’t be connected.

GandTtwice · 07/05/2025 09:50

Perhaps he has a bit of 'nervous tummy'. Seems like he has a few things all at once that might be worrying and the combination just stressed him out a bit.

Mumof1andacat · 07/05/2025 09:50

Might just be a coincidence but he could have a bug. It could also be a mix of anxiety, extra calpol and it bit of a come down from adrenaline from having the fitting yesterday. I had 5 years of orthodontic treatment. Not an easy path but very worth it

Emmacb82 · 07/05/2025 09:51

I doubt it’s anything to do with the braces, they cause pain but they wouldn’t cause those symptoms. I would say it’s more likely to be a bug in which case he cannot go to school until 48 hours clear. It could be anxiety but there’s no way of knowing so better to be safe and keep him home.

Iloveagoodnap · 07/05/2025 09:51

Could it not be that he was feeling anxious about the class move?

ItsSoStimulatingBeingYourHat · 07/05/2025 09:53

Does he have any SN?

I had braces as a teenager and really struggled due to sensory issues.
They made me feel claustrophobic and panicky- which made my stomach off as well.

Hope he feels better soon .

guylian · 07/05/2025 12:08

Thank you guys.
It could be any of those things I suppose, he doesn't have a temperature. I'm thinking it probably is a combination of paracetamol and not enough to eat and feeling anxious anyway.

Hi, I'm a bit confused, I thought calpol is just paracetamol, just thats the brand name? Is there something dodgy in there I don't know about?

I'm not sure what SN is though?
He does have a high gag reflex, he even gags with his mouth guard for hockey. Which is why we were pretty nervous about getting work done but he has two teeth that have nowhere to go, so we're hoping the brace will make space and he won't have to have teeth out later.
And he's always been picky about what he eats, it seems to be texture related.

How did you cope with braces? Were you ever actually sick?

Sorry, I was lazy in my typing!
I meant any special needs. (Sensory issues are quite common with autism)

I unfortunately never got used to my braces and when it came to the retainer stage I stopped wearing it so I’m the proud owner of crooked teeth 😩
I was queasy but never actually sick, but did have the other problem unfortunately!

RoseDog · 07/05/2025 12:28

Both my kids had braces and neither were sick, both uncomfortable and had pain but just took paracetamol.

Why does he still have calpol and not adult paracetamol?

Kapal · 07/05/2025 12:30

Sounds more like nervousness? Maybe a little bit of stress about the braces and then combined with the class move?

I had braces for a number of years and they do feel a bit sore especially the first few days and after they’ve been tightened but never gave me a dodgy stomach.

Only that Calpol has a lot of shite in it too - sweeteners and stuff, that lots of people can't digest very well.

My DD had SN and I trained her from a young age to use paracetamol suppositories. Obviously you can't vom them back up so it's great for sensitive children who are a bit prone to fevers etc. It's very common in other countries.

guylian · 07/05/2025 14:09

I have just, for the first time in my life, looked up the ingredients in calpol. I had no idea.
No, he's not on calpol for any particular reason. He's my eldest, we have 6+ calpol in the house and I use it for the kids because it's there and it's easy. Also I had real trouble learning to swallow pills when I was younger and I suspect, with his high gag reflex, texture aversion, that he might be the same. But it's not that it just hasn't occurred to me not to. I think I also assumed something made for kids would be gentler on their tummies rather than harsher. And it has a laxative effect (some of the ingredients do anyway) so that might explain that. Ffs
Argh.
Thank you for the explanation of SN =special needs, obvious now I'm looking at it. Thank you.
