Putting eyedrops in eyes

My toddler has a mild eye infection and has been prescribed eye drops. He hates them and much wrestling ensues before I can get them in. Is there any way I can make this easier for both of us?

I had the same problem with my son when he was smaller, had drops that had to go in 4 times per day - impossible. I went back to the doctor who changed the prescription to something called fucithalmic (sp?) that had a much thicker consistency drop, and only had to go in twice per day (which I managed to do while he was asleep), also, when I did these drops while he was awake they didn't seem to hurt him as much

Tigermoth, it's the kind of thing that really needs 2 people to do it! Try holding him lying down across your lap, hold his arms down and get the other person to drop the drops. It ain't easy! Oh, and try and get your "lovely assistant" to stand behind your son when they're doing it as hopefully your son will tilt his head back to see what's going on, making it easier to aim. Then keep him lying down for a minute so the drops actually stay in his eyes. Hope this helps.

We have just been having our morning battle to get the eye drops in - what a nightmare! My son was initially alright with them, but now he is impossible, as he wriggles so much. This morning I have given up for the time being, as he is in such a strop, so I thought I would log on for a bit and was amazed to find this conversation about the very problem!

I successfully cleared up my dd's conjuctivitis without too much hassle (used the Fuci-what's-it-called ointment which was easier to smear on her eye rather than have to rugby-tackle her to get drops in). However, I've now got it and have had it for over a week!! At least she didn't have to drive with her eyes streaming and itching!! It's probably not gone away because I'm not putting the ointment in during the day, 'oily' eyes don't look very nice at work...........

I was wondering roughly how long it takes for the infection to clear up? My son is now on his 5th day of drops and is still getting sticky eyes.

Yes, fucithalmic acid ROCKS! Why don't docs just prescribe it for wriggly toddlers, it's twice a day (while asleep if necessary) and stays in cos it is creamy. And boy it works quickly! I now "ask for it by name".
