Strangling sensation around waist.

Posting on behalf of a friend who isnt on Mn.

She has been experiencing this sensation at night for a while.

When she is asleep and breathing more deeply, she is experiencing a pain around her waist as if the waistband on her pj's are too tight. It happens when she pulls them down below her belly before she goes to sleep too. So its not that.

If its relevant, shes F 46 Im guessing around 3 stone overweight, but is dieting and exercising, and has lost a good deal of weight this year.
Non smoker but vaper.

Tia

Has she any other symptoms?

I thought of the MS hug

She has PSOS, fatty liver disease and has had high blood in the past, but all that is under control with meds.

I don't know anything about the ms hug, but does it just happen at night?

Also its her waist, not her torso

Gallbladder issues?
In the beginning mine felt like squeezing
around my middle.

If she’s doing more exercise than usual, it could be that her core muscles are starting to strengthen and tighten…that can be quite painful in my experience, especially if you’re coming from being very unfit

I agree about the MS hug

I used to get this before I had an umbilical hernia repaired.

That's the first thing I thought of too. My late husband had MS and he quite often got that feeling.

LuckyManifestations · 06/05/2025 12:56

Thank you all for your thoughts.
She has health anxiety in general so Im a bit reluctant to tell her what has been said, even though she had asked me to post on here after having a wealth of information regarding a nasty rash on her torso a few weeks ago that wasnt responding to the cream the GP gave her.

I don't think its to do with the exercise, as she started that in December.

Does anyone know if the ms hug only happens at night?

I found this.....

Why MS Hug May Be Worse at Night:
Reduced Movement and Muscle Tightness:
During sleep, reduced movement and muscle tension can exacerbate spasticity, a common MS symptom that can contribute to the MS hug.

CherryRipe1 · 06/05/2025 14:34

I have this, it can be fibromyalgia, neuralgias, essential tremor disorder, MS, neuropathy.

ThisOpenMauveLurker · 06/05/2025 16:08

Could be that the angle of her neck on the pillow is causing some nerve compression, or that she has a spinal disc impingement that only makes itself known in certain positions. But the description does make me think of the MS hug or transverse myelitis. The last two can be exacerbated by a small increase in body temperature (Uhthoff’s phenomenon) if she’s particularly cosy in bed.

The rash wouldn't be shingles, would it?

MabelsBeats · 06/05/2025 22:34

For me that was my gallbladder. It went undiagnosed for several very miserable years as it didn’t show up in a typical way. It got worse and worse with nighttime bouts of pain and became very distressing, I tried endless different elimination diets and was incorrectly diagnosed with IBS.

Whenever I see anything like this I pop on to shout ‘gallbladder’ as I hate the thought of anyone going through what I did.

No, it just needed stronger steroid cream.
