It’s a big ‘un under the nail. Nail’s really short. Tried with a sterilised needle and tweezers but it’s too far down to catch. Any tips please?

Ouch! Try soaking in warm water for 10
mins and see if that shifts it

Lougle · 05/05/2025 21:45

Can you soak it in warm salty water? It might loosen up the skin a bit and allow you to nab the end?

TwelveBlueSocks · 05/05/2025 21:45

Gosh that sounds massively frustrating. I'm not sure what to do but wanted to send sympathy.

Might it be worth going to minor injury before it swells up and becomes complicated to deal with?

RosaBaby2 · 05/05/2025 21:46

Pic?? 😂👌

IF you know any one with the good tweezers, that would do it.

I have these for work.

Magnesium sulphate paste might be worth a try. Soak finger in hot water to soften it all up, put a dollop of mag sulph paste on and cover up/seal it. Leave overnight. It sucks out infection and I’ve used it on splinters before now

I went to boarding school and our ancient wooden dorm room floor was very splintery, but we still used to slide on it.. the school nurse used to use this to get out any embedded ones.

My grandmother used to wet a small piece of bread and apply a bandage over it. Once the bread dried it pulled it right out. Worked every time.

If it’s wedged under the nail you might need minor injuries as they clean it out properly and check no bits of splinter left in which could cause infection.

Thanks for your replies. It's DP's nail and he's gone to bed so no pics sorry. But I did suggest magnesium sulphate paste to him, he's got some at home so will give it a try. I will report back!
