I havent been well for ages and a routine blood test showed up that im hyperthroid.

I am actually very releived as until 5 years ago i rarely visited my GP.
Since then i have been there with palpatations racing heart shortness of breath panic attacks to name a few.
I disagreed with all of his diagnosis and after refusing to take inhalers because they did absolutely nothing because i actally wasn`t asthmatic ! my lovely practice nurse agreed with me entitely and ran some basic tests.
my bloods came back showing that i am hyperthyroid and also that my blood pressure is high enough to have affected my kidneys but thats another story.

My thyroid has obviuosly been wrong for years as my eyes are affected also.
I saw the consultant Thursday and he`s going to ring me tomorrow when the rest of my bloods are back.
He said i have mild thyrotoxicosis and will start treatment tomorrow .
Just wondered if ther was anyone on here who i could get a bit of support of now and again as i underdtand and know lots of hypothyroid people but hyper is quite differrent.
Many thanks
x

Yes! I'm quite an expert (well, my consultant once told me I should be a thyroidologist but he was prone to sarcasm).
I was diagnosed 5 years ago, think I'd had it all of my adult life - or on and off anyway. Have been on meds from then til about a month ago and finally seem to be in remission. Had a lovely DS 2.6 yrs ago who's healthy and well (though having a small baby knocked me sideways at the time).

As you say, I was also very relieved when I was diagnosed - I was having so many panic attacks I thought I was having a breakdown, Shortness of breath was so bad I couldn't walk upstairs or more than 100 yards, think I was lucky I was diagnosed before anything worse happened.

The good news is that the meds will bring the worst of your symptoms under control fairly quickly. There are several treatment options for the long term. I've got a helpful book, and there's a (american) website that helped me a lot. Supposed to be studying tonight but will try to find the details of both and post again later.

The book is 'The Healthy Thyroid' by Patsy Westcott and the website is www.elaine-moore.com/gravesdisease/ (though all the stuff about blood test results uses American numbers so will be different to what you get in Britain, if you're here).
There are lots of other resources online but I thought the articles about stress on this site were helpful.
Hope you're feeling better soon. I'm around on MN quite often if you want to chat.

Hi
Fab thank you.
I am a little cross today as i went to see a consultant on wed who said i had thyrotoxicosis and needed treatment.he wanted to check my antibodies first though ?
We decided my results would be back fri or mon (am a midwife and work in hospital ).He said he would phone me fri anyway though and didnt.I assumed he hadnt phoned me because the results werent back. Anyhow i rang the lab today because my results still werent showing up and they said he didnt ask for thyroid antbodies only full blood count ! I couldnt really argue the point (even though id seen him write it on the form and my collegue took the blood . ) because im not supposed to access my own results.
I then phoned his secretary (i went private ) and she`s not in until tomorrow and he is on holiday for a week !.
In the meantime my tsh is

Could you go back to your GP and see if he/she will prescribe in the meantime? You must be feeling awful. I could tell you to avoid caffeine/stimulants/stress etc in the meantime but I'm sure you know all of that. Sorry can't be more help but feeling it for you.

fakeblonde · 19/05/2008 20:37

Yes if he hasn`t written to my gp (kinda hoping letter in post 0 i will go and ask for something to at last calm me down.
Cheers x

Hi again, Glad your consultant hasn't deserted you! The results you've already got indicate that you're thyrotoxic (as you know) but the antibody test should indicate why - i.e whether you have an autoimmune disease like Grave's disease. I think the treatment is much the same whatever the cause - they will probably give you some Carbimazole or PTU initially, to bring your levels into normal range and then take things from there. Sometimes they also prescribe beta-blockers to control the symptoms until your levels come down (though I was never offered these).
I don't know anything about lymphoma I'm afraid - would mention it to the Dr if you're worried though.
Hope you start getting some treatment soon. Has the Dr told you to stay off work? Take care x
