Does anyone have any adult reflux tips? Mine has come back with a vengeance...

foxinsocks · 18/05/2008 21:27

I need some omeprazole but chances are I won't be able to get an appointment till Friday.

Haven't had this for a year I think. Seem to remember it's small meals, not spicy that sort of thing...

anyone got any other tips because at the moment, I'm spending most of my time swallowing down regurgitated food and waking up hoarse because the acid is coming up into my throat at night grrrrr (and it's making me feel v sick)

prop head end of bed up on a couple of bricks, telephone directories, bits of wood

small bland meals often

no tight clothes (I even have a bra which makes my reflux worse)

no bending over

you can buy Gaviscon over the counter, and can take it in much bigger doses than the bottle states

you can get ranitidine over the counter and double the dose (you can take 150mg at a time)

foxinsocks · 18/05/2008 21:32

thanks tissy...that's really interesting about the bra. I hadn't thought about that but I've just taken mine off and I already feel a little bit better so I'll make sure I where a looser one on the loosest setting.

Which do you think is better? the ranitidine or the gaviscon? I'm right by a big boots so can go in there and get some tomorrow when I get to work

milk...I founf that helped lots with mine....
altho, since my allergies were diagnosed, I have not suffered

sympathy, tis horrid!

foxinsocks · 18/05/2008 21:33

where, dear oh dear, WEAR

FrayedKnot · 18/05/2008 21:33

The biggest triggers for mine are fatty foods and taking NSAIDs.

I get heartburn rather than acid reflux, so just pain rather than acid in my mouth, but I suppose the things to avoid are the same.

foxinsocks · 18/05/2008 21:34

hmm (interesting about the allergies) you see, I have a suspicion mine is being made worse by dairy and caffeine (as I've only been back at work since last September and have started drinking coffee/lattes...)

I have a week at work where I'm supposed to be doing lots of entertaining and tbh, the thought of having to eat restaurant meals this week is making me want to wince

ranitidine is better

cocolepew · 18/05/2008 21:36

Jsst read in Womans Own health pages, 'to sleep on your left side, studies show it stops stomach acid rising into your gullet'.

foxinsocks · 18/05/2008 21:38

thanks

yes, nurofen is lethal isn't it. I haven't had to take it in ages thank goodness. Will try and avoid fatty foods too (sigh) and get some ranitidine tomorrow.

I might write to the doctor and ask for the prescription (I've had omeprazole before) and then get the appointment for Friday if they have any spaces left.

Gaviscon.

It may help to cut down food intake and to lose weight, if you are overweight.

foxinsocks · 18/05/2008 21:39

left side, like my left? how interesting. I think I normally sleep on my right (because I face outwards hmmm, think so). Will try and spin round and see if it makes a difference and will prop up my pillows too. I might try sleeping half sitting up, I think that might work.

Psychomum5 · 18/05/2008 21:43

well...for me, avoiding milk and many fruits is so much better....

milke seemed to make it easier, yet, since I have stopped drinking it, I almost have to reflux, and no heartburn atall (the reflux I do have is on my heavy housework days, so pressure on my belly causes that!)

foxinsocks · 18/05/2008 21:47

yes, I find any exercise I do focused around my stomach makes it much worse.

Don't think I'm hugely overweight, am a reasonable size and BMI in the right place (had to work it out for insurance at work!) but have a lot of blubber round my tum and thighs that could do with shifting grrr.

Hello foxy

Much sympathy, I have a hiatus hernia (courtesy of dd1) and take Ranitidine nightly - 150mg. Don't eat too late at night, use pillows and yes, better sleeping on left for me too, but mostly the only answer is drugs drugs drugs

Get some over the counter (forget Gaviscon, if you've been at the omeprazole stage head straight for Ranitidine, I would) and stay away from spicy, heavy, fatty foods. I find spaghetti bolognese, or any rich tomato sauce, lethal.

Hope its better soon!

tissy · 18/05/2008 22:04

take both!

I love the taste of aniseed Gaviscon (peppermint just tastes like liquid toothpaste). I take 25ml at bedtime and look forward to the aniseedy burp!

vole3 · 19/05/2008 13:52

Try raising the head end of the bed - use a couple of bricks or something of a similar height to assist gravity in keeping things where they should be.

KathG · 19/05/2008 14:25

I find yakult helps a lot in the morning when my throat is sore...

poshwellies · 19/05/2008 15:03

I cut out milk and it helped my hiatus hernia greatly-I do have a little bit of dairy still as I'm a bit of a cheese fiend.I now drink lactofee milk and I don't suffer with it anymore

I was on double the dose of omeprazole at one point and now,I'm med free-thank gawd.

Cut out spicy foods, pastries, tart citrusy foods, and fatty foods like elibean said.Oh, and wine

I hope it calms down soon fox

foxinsocks · 20/05/2008 20:01

thanks everyone!

have been downing the ranitidine (and it has worked a bit) and have got an appointment on friday afternoon for the doc grrr. I am stuck in the hurts when I don't eat enough, hurts when I eat too much cycle grr.

Hi

If you are desperate you can buy omeprazole from pharmacies. Called Zanprol (10mg tablets).

jangly · 20/05/2008 21:26

Drinking plain water can help. Dilutes the acid, or pushes it back down. I don't know which but it helps. Isn't ranitidine to ward it off before you eat. And gaviscon to deal with the acid if you didn't take the ranitidine?

foxinsocks · 20/05/2008 21:34

yes, I saw the Zanprol. The 10mg isn't strong enough annoyingly (tried it last time) so I decided to leave it and wait for the proper script from the doctor. Thanks for pointing that out though Davidsmum. The pharmacist didn't!

The ranitidine says take once a day.

jalopy · 20/05/2008 21:39

Foxy, hello mate. sorry to hear you are suffering.

Some great advice here. Avoid tomatoes too - so acidic.

Remember to sit for a while after food. No rushing around with the hoover. I know it's tempting but give yourself a break

Gaviscon really helps me.

Hope things improve.

foxinsocks · 20/05/2008 21:42

hello jalopy me chum

I know they'll refer me this time too which is a pita (sigh). Anyway, needs must.

thanks everyone
