If I have a chronic condition, will I ever be able to get medical insurance?

I am not sure if I have a chronic condition or not. I need to go and see the GP and ask for a referral. Also, at the same time, DH is about to get family medical insurance with work.

Someone told me to get the insurance quickly, because if I do have a chronic condition (an autoimmune disease), no insurer will touch me with a barge pole. I did a bit of research and chronic conditions aren’t covered anyway.

So I’m confused. If chronic conditions aren’t covered, why aren’t people who have them able to get insurance easily?

Should I get on DH’s plan before I even think about asking for a referral from the GP (even though I’d go via the NHS on this anyway)?

Confused!

Your friend is wrong. But your premium will be higher than you’re used to.
my chronic condition is better known - you just need to answer questions about medications, flare up etc.
My insurer is the post office, have previously used TopDog.

Yes you can get cover but you would have to declare if you were under investigation for any health matter. That could potentially affect the premium, maybe significantly.

Whoever told you to get on with it quickly wasn't helpful as you must inform the insurer of any changes anyway. You never get the better of insurance companies!

Yes I believe so but they would not be covered. My DH has exclusions related to the discs in his back and 2
Spine fusions on his neck as he has chronic pain related to these issues. I have exclusions for anything related to acne as I was on meds for acne at the time the cover started so they excluded it. I also declared my had recently had breast augmentation and any issues related to that surgery in the future would be excluded too. So I think you will get cover, it may be harder and more expensive though.

we have health insurance through DH’s work. I’m covered for new things but they won’t pay for ongoing treatment for my autoimmune condition. I’ve never had a problem with getting them to pay for anything unrelated and it doesn’t impact the cost of the plan for DH at all.

It depends. My work plan didn't have any restrictions at all, or medicals. Everything was covered, it was an organisation wide policy.
If I was to now try to buy insurance just for me, I would need to do a declaration and agree what was included/ excluded and the policy would be priced accordingly.

Would you be interested in something like Benenden, it would cover the referral and investigations for your condition but you have to have joined six months first.

For pre-existing condition cover, you need to shop around. It can be covered but, depending on the condition, it can be horrendously expensive but the variety of cost was mind boggling, even for comparable cover. Going through the usual comparison sites I was being quoted hundreds of pounds for single trip cover that previously would have been maybe £20, specialist pre-existing condition cover was more reasonable but still around £100 whereas the travel insurance bundled with my current account actually cover me on annual cover for no extra cost having spoken to them and declared the condition.
